there was a guy on Colbert last night who teaches inner city parents about parenting because they don't have the same resources to be educated about raising children as higher income people. Can't remember the name of the guy or organization but it was a really good idea.

I wasn't really even making a reference to Hip Hop and/or Rap culture, just that the majority of white people are not racist towards black people anymore (no more so than there are black people that are racist towards white people). I think we all need to understand that it wasn't me or you or any of us personally who enslaved their ancestors. I don't understand at all why I, or any other white person, should be held accountable/responsible for what some racist slaveowner did 100 years ago.

As a famous black poet once wrote, "Watermelon, watermelon, Cadillac car. We not as smart as we think we is".
Denegration rap is just that. To profit from it...to buy and support it...to promote it...just plain sucks.
One need only go to the inner city of Chicago, Detroit or the hovels of Mississippi to see the message it communicates to the youth. Fact: One in every four black men is in the justice system: "Livin' the thug life..."
These guys are schmucks - their bike riding abilities, or lack thereof (f**k the candor), notwitstanding.
Oh, and I'm black (for the record) and I ride as best I can as much as I can. Now, if I could just quit ogling the white women...
Oh, and white people don't have to trip. As the philosopher Chris Rock stated, "The real racism is in the black community. Black people can't stand n****as". And besides, 75% of the people who voted for Barack were white.
As another black rapper uttered, "sh*t done changed".

Did they also cover the concept of "non sequitur" when they were going over that bit about everyone being racist...

Teachers at my school have to take a course called "Empowering Multicultural Initiatives" which teaches that only white people can be racist. Racism is taught to be brought by society to keep one "race" dominant over others. In the USA the system has always been controlled by whites, so therefore only whites can be racist. This` is not my ideas, and I am just sharing what I have been told.
There are many differences between institutional racism and an individual's racism. A study of anthropological racism over the course of human history has proven the above wrong many many times. You're not attending Creationism U are you?

True statement and the corollary is Barack would not have been elected without that constituency. Put another way, they could have voted for McCain. One of the good things about the election is: "sh*t done changed"
The thing is for Barack: It's kinda like when NASA finally allowed black astronauts into the space program. They were designated for the first manned space mission to the sun (courtesy of the great Richard Pryor). Barack has one helleva mission.
Oh, and my comment about the astuteness of the prior post was tongue-in-cheek, if that wasn't entirely clear. That said, I do agree that racism has been institutionalized; but, I don't agree everyone is a racist by virtue of being a part of the establishment. That logic doesn't follow quite that handily and insults those who are not.
Lastly, since I have my literary thing on... I'd like to pose a few questions:
1. How could the human trade on the scale of african slavery been successfully carried out without somebody in compliance and gettin' rich sellin' humans at the source.
2. What's the difference between that and profiting from the promotion of human degradation as we hear in gangsta rap? (The main objection of morally-minded people).
3. How does one make a blanket statement about white racism when so many whites were 'dead set' against the practice on political, economic and moral grounds. With respect to Canada, the government opened its arms to slaves traveling on the underground railroad to freedom. (This is not to suggest that Canada has not had its challenges but certainly the outcome could have been very different without that policy).
Anyway...It's been nice reading the posts on the subject, and thanks for humoring me with a read of mine. As the ultimate product of both races, along with a good dose of American Indian, I'm happy to see Barack headin' to the 'house' and I'm extremely glad to see the nation 'move on up' (re: Curtis Mayfield). Damn, I guess my days at the 'house' are startin' to show. Heh...
*gets back to riding the streets of San Fran and checkin' out da fine women. Dayum!!!

^wrong. racism is a part of human subconscious living as a part of a society, any society. we are all racist, because there is no true impartiality. the fact that there is a notion of 'majority' or 'minority' or 'racism' at all is used to illustrate this. it is the degree to which you assert yourself over another and the judgement that becomes associated with that (read: Kant) that decides whether your racism is harmless or segregational.
i'm with Blick on this.

Nobody is sentient from the culture we live in, and that culture today is inherently racist.
Often in academia you might hear about someone being less racist than another (as in, racial activists might be less racist than Klan members), and that's certainly true.
To think that your mind is so pure to be completely unaffected by culture is a bit...pretentious? You tell me.

Having studied race and racism in the context of anthropology in college, I have to disagree with the "everyone is racist assertion. While Canada is not immune to racism, maybe we have it a bit better here in Toronto, seemingly the multicultural capital of North America. Many ppl I know care not one whit about race, and don't even use skin tone as an aid in description.
The power structure "good ol' boy network" in our society might very well be based upon racist ideals, but our entire culture? Culture as defined by what? Geography?, Genetics? I'd be more willing to give you partial points for our society could be perceived as inherently racist, but culture?
"Nobody is sentient from the culture we live in, and that culture today is inherently racist." Full fail
Nobody achieves sentience from our culture, because we gestate and are born as sentient beings. **** sapiens.
What culture are you speaking of?
The amount of racism I've witnessed in many countries around the world is indeed staggering sometimes, but I'd hardly call it an anthropological fact of culture.
and again no....WE aren't all racist. Not even close. If such a sweeping statement came from academia I'd be shocked, and would be very interested as to its source.
