Surly Steamroller 1" Fork

Has anyone used the 1" version of the Steamroller fork? On the Surly website, it indicates that the axle to crown length is 8 mm shorter on the 1" compared to the 1 1/8". I am wondering if this translates to 8 mm less tire clearance or if the crown is simple constructed differently. The Surly website does not indicate a different tire clearance for the two forks.
