This forum seriously is a ****ing joke. Two or three decent posts offered in two pages of idiocy.

A proper thing to do might be to report the bike as found to the cops and give them a serial no. Ask if anyone's reported a bike stolen and let them know that you'll be keeping it if you don't hear from them or an owner in 30 days.

I once left a neat dutch-style bike, a beater with lots of different issues, out on the sidewalk, leaned up against a building. In Boston. It stayed there a full 3-1/2 weeks before it finally walked away.

anyone who leaves a bike with two flat tires laying around that **** hole worcester deserves to have it stolen. it's not like it was a nice new roadie or anything, finders keepers.

You started a stupid thread about a divisive issue when there are a dozen other "bike rescue" threads that always suck and you have the balls to call the forum a "****ing joke?"

Here's a joke for you! Q: What do you call a stupid poster who doesn't know how to search and has obviously been here for five minutes?
A: Blais!

The post wasn't about the bike being found. I asked if anyone knew which manufacturers used Nitto components in the mid 90's. NOT about the ethics of taking abandoned bikes or even which specific bike it might be.

So if someone strolled into this forum saying ...

Oh, so robbed the Wells Fargo on Mission the other day wearing a hockey mask. Do you think I should have used panty hose instead???

You wouldn't expect anyone to be like ... wait ... you robbed a bank???

Given the information, the guy had every right to take that bike. If it was on a public street (or on someone's property it doesn't belong to), not locked up, in as dumpy condition as he makes it out to be, the original owner probably doesn't want it. What if it was a busted television? Or maybe an old refrigerator? A skateboard? An old razor scooter?

And OP, you should post pictures of it.

Once I saw a kid in a public park. I needed someone to polish my bike collection and he was just sitting there unsupervised, so I took him.

True story.

No, you didn't. That post would have looked like this:

In conclusion: lurk more and don't ***** about the forum when you post ****ty threads.

Anyway...
The front dropouts look like they have Suntour stamped on them.
The headset simply has Japan stamped on the front.
The frame is lugged.
Serial number only appears on bottom bracket shell and starts with SC (schwinn?) I forget how many digits, I'll write it down.
No badges or stickers on the bike whatsoever.
The seat has been replaced with what appears to be a springer from a much older bike.
Chainrings are cheap-looking and stamped(?) with the chainring guard made of the same piece as the large ring.
I have to take a closer look at the crank arms but I seem to remember them being Sugino, maybe not. I'll write more stuff down when I get home.
Any ideas?

We NEED PICTURES!

And here's my previous post in case you missed it:

"Blais, we need pics. Important stuff to look for: What do the rear dropouts look like? Stamped and held by crimped stays? Stamped but brazed? Forged with a name like Campagnolo? Is the dropout vertical, semi or full horizontal or track? Are there any serial numbers on the dropouts?

Serial numbers on the bottom bracket? Any chrome anywhere?

You said it wasn't lugged and/or a steel frame. Aluminum, or brazed or TIG welded steel?

What does the seatpost cluster look like?

Downtube shifter bosses? Cable braze-ons?"

Okay, so now it is a lugged frame. Front dropouts saying Suntour says the frame is ~20 years old or more.

Another thing to check is the inside diameter of the seat tube. If it takes a 27.2mm seatpost, you've got yourself a Columbus SL or Reynolds 531 bike, at least. Or some good Tange.

You might want to post this in C&V. They're wizards at determining the makes of mystery bikes. However, they will demand many, many photos.

(And I'd just leave out the part about how you came to acquire this bike.)

Fair enough.
My camera bought the farm, would have posted pictures already, I'm going to see if I can borrow a friend's. I don't have an internet connection at home right now so it's a little tough to go back and fourth.

Just go to your friend's house and leave a note in his camera bag.
He'll understand.
