Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

What do you think?

I have a mid 90's gary fisher. I bought some thin (road bike style) tires to ride it on the road with. Now i'm thinking of putting on some drop bars and making a singlespeed. Kind of like a ss road bike but with 26" rims. Speed isn't my goal hear. Simplicity is. Has anyone done this? What do ya think?

Why would you think that?

Bikes: Too many bikes, too little time to ride

i'm not sure about changing to road bars as that would affect the clamp size of your stem and brake levers, since mtb and road components aren't exactly interchangeable. you can run flat bars, maybe chop a few inches off the ends, or add "road drops" which attach like bar ends.

Bikes: Indy Fab steel deluxe, Aventon cordoba, S-works stumpy fsr, Masi vincere, Dahon mu uno, Outcast 29 commuter

I put drops on my commuter mtb just for kicks once. Very shortly changed back to risers. Just didn't feel comfortable for me. Looked kinda cool, though.

It may be ridiculous to you but I like it and thats just about all that matters Not to mention that it wasnt built for "bombing down hills." I ride it on the rode 100% of the time

That bike makes more sense than most folks who buy a mtn bike and then never take it on the dirt.
