Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Open pro's get my vote all around. They are lighter.

I have Mavis, though not as nice as open pros, but I think they all rock.

Mavic Open Pros. I only wish they came polished. I don't like hunting and spending alot for a set of polished MA-2's.

Bikes: Titus road, Fort CX

I like both the MA3s I have (2 accidents, only needed to be slightly trued) and the CXPs I had. Mavics all the way (although I am now trying a DeepV Velocity. So far, so good)

Does anyone remember the model that came out before the open pros, weren't they like open 4 cd or something like that? I remember having them on a bike which passed through my hands sometime ago... Stayed true/light....

Which flavor of the CXP's? The 33's are pretty stout. Read nothing but good about them. I'm looking to get a pair laced to some Dura Ace hubs later this year.

I've got a pair of 22's on my singlespeeder, they have held up well over the past couple thousand miles and I'm a clydesdale.

Bikes: Rock Lobster track, Colnago Dream, Ti Paramount, Litespeed Vortex compact, Santa Cruz Blur, Bianchi cyclocross...always wanting more...

In a non-Mavic vein, have you ever considered Ambrosio Excellence? After almost 10 years of building my own wheels, and always with Mavic, I finally used a pair of them - also laced to the Surly "new" fixed hubs - and have to say they are very nice. I especially like the cool gold counterweight at the valve hole and they have stayed true blue in the short time I've had them. About $10 cheaper than the Open Pros to boot, but the seam isn't welded. Just throwing it out as an alternative to the norm.

cripter,

What kind of riding do you do?

Open pro's are a great all around and if built correctly( # spokes and spoke types) will last a long time. The CXP 33's are more aero and heavier which means they can take more abuse.

I have not used the Ambrosio's but have been eyeing them for a while.

There was a guy on Ebay selling old Mavic open (NOT open pro's) 28H rims for $20 delivered to your door. He had a hundred of them. I was wondering if anyone had an opinion on these NOS rims from the 80's and 90's. What is the difference between them (open) and the new(open pro's)?
