FYI: multiple gears does not cure anything. I stopped MTB last summer for a few months because of my knees and it had gears. It is better to focus on knee maintenance, i.e. stretching, working out your leg muscles, standing up and pedaling, etc. Sorry, but switching is not the "cure."

I'd say gears reduce strain on knee's... you can downshift for hills and such.. instead of always pushing one gear which might be too high.
