holy cow. On the Route bike shop....i was their very first customer in 1991. there used to be a gap on that corner and a walgreens across the street (that used to be a movie theater) >>>i ran my business out of a storefront 2 doors down from that bike shop.
this whole thread reminds me of my younger, single days of riding to Lakeshore Healthclub and running errands all around the city.
lived on east cedar st, dearborn & huron, lasalle & chicago ave, western and lunt, broadway & barry, clark & fullerton.... geez. i couldn't keep an apt.
but believe me, after the 1,000,000th time on the lakefront (the best route is south to 63rd st) and riding the length of lincoln, western ave (the longest road in the city) you'll find that the best riding is in the suburbs.
enjoy it!!!

I ride 60% chicago and 40% suburbs. Both have their +/-'s. Suburbs the wind isn't so harsh(trees!) and there are a lot of good rails2trails. City has pavement and more bike-aware drivers (aware, not friendly). City has better places to bike to like the Handlebar and Soul Veg. jeff

seriously>>>you wouldn't believe the fine routes that are out here. there are a ton of organized rides and serious riders. there are many nice semi-rural routes that you wouldn't know existed unless you 'knew' the suburbs. just like people who have never lived in the city doesn't know the great haunts and rides there. The trail system is awesome as well. There are a few USPS riders that appear on rides up here.
have you spent much time in the suburbs yet? try it, you'll like it.
braveviking: we've also got 2 ice rinks within 4 miles, more soccer fields and baseball fields than you can play on, and of course the best schools around.
