braking on nmsw

I was wondering if anyone here runs a brake on a non machined side wall.

I've heard these are the problems:

1. Less effective
2. Doesn't work in rain
3. Takes off powdercoat
4. make noise

I've also heard people say that all of that is bull**** and they source Sheldon Brown, etc.

I've heard some people say it doesn't matter just change your break pads (Cork, composites, etc).

Does anyone know the truth?

Thanks

stick in spokes is surprisingly effective and doesn't do a thing to your sidewalls

True, but I find that it's easier to just jam a foot in there. The end result is essentially the same.

not exactly the same if the rims are painted... i would expect your #1 #2 and #3 to be true in that case...

i have nmsw's and i ride a front brake. it's really not bad, there is some wear on the rim itself but not noticeable from a distance. other than that, i wouldn't expect the brake to work in the snow at all.

oh, mine make a very loud terrifying scream.

um. fail thread. you do not run caliper brakes on non machined sidewalls.

that belongs more in the poseur/jackass thread.

Painted/powdercoated NMSW = not okay to run caliper brakes.

But it's fine to run caliper brakes on un-painted/not powdercoated NMSW. Grant Peterson of Bridgestone/Rivendell advocates NMSW instead of machined.

I've never had a wheel with machined sidewalls in more than 30 years. Maybe painted wheels would be an issue, but anodized aluminum should not be a problem at all.

I feel you man, I know people do it. A lot of colors come in anodized. Does anyone know exactly which Velocity deep v and which Weinmann dp 18s are anodized?

WTF is that? The green giant's stem. Did gumby steal a bike. Did Dikeme Mutombo take up cycling with kanye. Is mr. fantastic digging the new ride? Also, if you know the anodized colors of the weinmanns and deep v's hook us up with info?

You can run a front brake on powercoated wheels. I did this with a deep v. The coating wears away in a day or two, and then it's perfectly fine.

i have a front brake on my nonmachined, anodized deep v. i rarely use it, partly because i have found statements 1, 2, and 4 to be true. obviously there is no powdercoat to take off but it leaves ugly black marks any time i use the brake. next bike will have a machined front wheel, for sure.

The geniuses at trek decided to make the soho-s' rims have a braking surface, but also powdercoat them.

The paint has been taken off, it makes a horrible grinding noise when I brake that makes me cringe, it sucks in the rain.

But it's effective.
