There was a pair of these rims waiting for me when I got to work last night (unfortunatly, they're for Goatmeal)

I think he knows what he's going to build them up with, but I'm wondering what you would do with a pair of open pros (32 hole, black BTW) that had pretty much sat in a garage for awhile and weren't costing much?

Would there be specific hub/spoke combination that would be better than another? Is there something these rims beg for? I've been pretty happy with every tire I've ever had with a mavic rim, and these ones look really nice... might have to get myself a pair sometime...

yeah i am pretty stoked, I just now have to buy the that miche groupo from chuck's, and learn how to build a wheel....

I'd go with a black Surly "new" hub and DT Swiss competition double-butted spokes. Bombs away!

Good call on the Surly hubs Schiek. I have a set built to Open Pro FR and Velocity RR.

Goatie - you might wanna do a bit o' research as the Miches recently got dug on by another forumeer for breakdown in winter conditions. I would say as an occasional use hub, the Miche will be fine. Additionally, aren't you restricted to JUST Miche cogs? Though I heard that somewhere...but that could be the Absinthe

I was very tempted by the Mich cranks. Unfortunately they're 135 BCD which is the Campy road standard. I looked around and could not find any other track chainrings (1/8") for that BCD. If you plan to use 3/32" gear then you should be OK as Salsa and others make compatible chain rings.....but not Miche. Someone else mentioned that the Miche chainring blots threaded directly into the crank arms. In the end I decided to go with the Sugino 75's.

I get a set of Paul Hubs (Black) and I would use Black Spokes on them. Then I would install them on a Bianchi Pista Concept size 55cm, Carbon Seatpost, ITM Track Bars/Stem and .............you get the idea.

Nice idea 'bout the surly hubs, I had no idea the miche aren't winter worthy. Considering this is Minnesnowta, 6-9 months of my commute is done with snow on the ground.

I already have the bike I am going to put the new wheels on, 80's kuwahara road frame, black, double butted tange, lugged blah blah blah. Black seatpost, black saddle, duralluminum nitto 40cm pista bars, nitto stem, black grips, dura-ace black cog/lockring, black spd pedals, etc. Now I just need to find a nice set of black crank arms, I already have a nice 144bcd sugino chainring, if I could only find matching arms...

Does anyone know how I would figure out spoke length?

i have the silver/high flange phil's laced to my open pros. radial in the front, 3x in the back. black rims, black spokes. pretty sweet wheels all around. i was originally going to get surlies, and lace them to what eventually became my road rims (ritchey rock blablabhablahs) but at the time when i was getting everything together they were on back-order and i wanted my wheels NOW!!!! so i "compromised" and got the phils instead.

The only black arms that I have found are FSA Track cranks and Chainring. They are very sharp looking But.... They use the ISIS bottom bracket which has been getting a lot of bad press about failure problems. I think I would wait until they sort the problems out before I committed.

Yeah actually I have a Isis BB on my 2003 pista, which seems to be failing. I would like to sell the bike, but I don't like the idea of placing a bike on ebay which has potencial problems. So first I spent 12$ on the isis/splined bb puller, now I am going to have to spend around 20 more to get the BB tool so I can actually remove the BB. On top of this I will probably have to replace the bb, I bet I spend 75+ just getting this bike ready to sell, sux...

Also, I know the truativ cranks on the Pista are black, I have just been looking for tapered versions...

I haven't found any out there. I wonder about some polished cranks plated/annodized/painted/whatever? Has anybody tried this? Probably large bucks.

61, mostly stock, although a shorter ritchey stem, and a matching black CODA caliper....

I need to fix the gosh darn creaking though, really quite annoying, I don't think it has too much affect on the bike's performance though....

If my opinion matters to any, I say stay away from miche hubs. Mine crapped out in a matter of weeks. I think if you have the 120 spacing that the IRO's are a great buy or if you have 130/135 that the Van Dessel/Kogswel hubs are just as good as the surly's. Cheaper as well.

The same guy who I bought the open pros from, used to work at quality, so he might be able to get me a good deal on some surly hubs. I big part of me wants to just save up and buy Phil's though....

i'd use a new surly hubset with 14 gauge spokes, and i'd be sure to put a different sized cog on both sides, b/c options are nice.

Actually, the guy the rims are coming from was mentioning pauls as a good choice earlier this morning - also mentioning that a guy he used to work with at quality keeps thinking that he 'owes' something to him... That's actually why he even had the rims (he pretty much only rides tricked out full suspension MTBs).

Not sure if the spacing would work with the kuwahara though. They would look sweet with these rims IMO.

I have 2 sets of free wheel Pauls on s/s bikes, one off road and one for street. They are great hubs. I called them and asked if they could be sized down to 126mm from 135mm, as that is the spacing on the hubs as they come from the factory. The rep told me "no way" that you had to use them as they come. All sorts of dire consequences would occur. Well I am not one to be bought off that easily. I took the hubs in question over to my bench grinder and ground off the rather thick ends of the hubs where the bolt fits in to hold it in the drop out and sized it down to 126. That was three years ago and still no dire concequences. They are great sealed bearing hubs for s/s and I understand that the new ones for fixed come in either 120 or 130 and now have stainless steel axles. I would not hesitate to get some and I am concidering some for next years project bike. They look kind of like the old style Campy High Flange track hubs. And, they come in black or silver.
