Central Park Laps 2009

I didn't want to post this in the Rides and Races section because it seems pretty dead in there. But if the mods need to move this, go for it.

I'm trying to gauge interest to see if anyone on here would like to get a group together for some night time Central Park laps. Not a race but a good way for a group of us to get out there and get some base miles in.

I know a lot of dudes from the other forum are doing training days at Kissena so this could be something similar.

PM if interested.

You know I never rode the loop on my FG only on my vintage and a hybrid I used to have. Been meaning to try it too. Sent a PM.

How fast are your laps, usually? Wanna know if I can hang.

That's a damn good question. I'm gonna hit the park Monday night and I'll time 2 laps. I guess the whole idea behind getting a group together would be so we all get faster.....

Haha I was thinking the same thing, I went and hit some hills today on my new bike, still a little out of shape.

I went out last night and did 2 laps. I ended up timing the second lap (I forgot to set my watch the first lap). I was a little over 18 min. But I was dragging my chain lock and I had ridden down to the park from the Bronx. I'd like to keep hitting the park one or two nights a week and just keep building on my times.

I was supposed to go tonight, but I'm stuck working late.

It was nice out tonight. More cyclists coming out of the woodwork now that it's warmer out.

What gears are you running on your bike for those laps? I think I'm going to try and get up there this weekend if it's not raining.

You should post this in the Northeast Region forum also. I think there are some people who meet up and do somthing like this already.

I've been running 46x17 through winter and I like it. I spin a lot more. Starting and stopping are nice and easy too. Last summer I was pushing 47x16 and I liked that too. It's all about building up your legs to get used to the gearing.

Yeah I'm actually running the same thing right now. I'm going to try and time myself this weekend and if it's up to par I'll be down to do the run next week.

I run 46x17. I just go out and suffer when I get to the big hill regardless of which bike I'm on.

Bikes: a bunch.

I generally do 4 laps in 70mins in 42/15.. though, I avoid the park when its too nice out. (its getting more and more crowded this past week) Where is your proposed meet up spot Monsterkidz? Are you going next Tuesday?

The River Road ride out in NJ is a bit more challenging, as it has a real hill.. and the fact that there are no cars and minimal human traffic make it great. The downside being that there's a Portage over a rockslide in the middle of it.

River Road is a great ride! I've never done it on my track bike only on my roadie. In the summer I try to do the ride to Nyack or Piermont up 9W every other weekend.

As far as a meeting place goes, I'm down for whatever works best for everyone. I usually enter the park at the base of the Great Hill and work my way south down the west side. I should be goind Tuesday and might hit the park after work tomorrow too.

Faster

Wow.....70 minutes for 4 laps is 17:30 per lap - that's pretty fast. I'm only at about 37 minutes for 2 laps. I'm sure I can ride faster with a pack though. Monsterkidz....are you still planning on a group ride?

I'm jealous. A Boston Common lap would take all of 3 minutes. + the fact that it isn't allowed there.

Yeah, it seems like we are all around the same times so far. It would be cool if we got out there in a pack one night. Maybe get a race series going by summer time.

I just got some new pedals and straps on tonight so if all goes well I'll have some times tomorrow too, if it looks like I can hang, I'm down for a late night ride.

I'm way more out of shape than I thought I was. That hill at the north side of the park kills me. I have some more riding to do before I should hit up the night ride with you all.
