I knew what it was just not the year it was built. After some research i put it between 84-88. its made of some wierd stuff though. aluminum lugged chrome dropouts graphite carbon composite coated almuninum tubes and i guess it was all put together by the process of thermally bonding dissimmilar materials. its got a wicked crack in the seat tube but underneath its aluminum im wondering about its saftey or even how to fix it. it was worth 50 bucks i paid for it though even though its cracked.

Sorry for the crappy pic, but a bit of an update (new stem/bars). I really like the risers, much more comfortable, just gotta cut them a bit narrower.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Was thinking that when the apocalypse does come there should not be any reason not to be comfortable as I ride through zombie infested streets... gearing is about 65 on the high side and 58 on the low for really nasty conditions and heavily loaded panniers.
Every bike needs a bell and my dummy lever now has a purpose... wonder if I can get a 105 level bell to go with the levers ?
Seriously though... trekking bars are the shizzle if you want to be comfortable and have what seems to be limitless hand positions. Even unwrapped they have a very nice ride quality and the new cork just makes them that much better.
Picked up some PDW fenders and did not even notice that their blue logo matched the bike... will probably put some full PB Cascadia or Zefal fenders on at some point but found the PDW "Sodapop" fenders to work really well. The front fender actually comes down low enough to keep spray of my shoes and it has been wet and slushy the past few days.
And look mom...no tt protector.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Kalloy... $20.00 at my LBS.... finish is pretty nice and I have been beating up a few other sets of these on my cargo bike and hybrid for some time.
These are medium weight bars with thick walled alloy tubes... used shaved down wine corks for bar plugs as even the smaller sized plugs that came with the tape were too big.
Lots of hand positons and the outside position is great for standing and hammering up hills especially when you are carrying larger loads as it is really stable... forward corners are where my drop levers used to be so position there is the same.
Wider bars also improve your breathing...

well definitely an interesting frame for sure.
that sucks about the crack, post a pic of it, maybe someone here in the know can assess its safety or fixability
it definitely looks like a fun frame to build a bike around

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
It is a 1988 Kuwahara Shasta which was hand built on Ishiwata triple butted tubes... these were basically touring / expedition quality frames designed for 26 inch wheels.
It is a tough and rather light bike for what it is... those 26 by 2 Schwalbe Hurricanes roll out fast, ride well, and have not suffered a flat in well over 10,000 miles and still look great.
It's a pretty decent beater... I refer to it as my UAV (Urban Assault Vehicle).
