Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I think part of it is due to overhype for the SS/FG bikes. I think you'll find nobody much hates penny-farthing bikes. (They don't ride them, but don't hate them either). But if every third rider was on a penny-farthing bike, bragging about how it was superior to every other bike...well, you might tend to resent that after a while.

I disagree.

lots of roadies give me dirty looks when i pass them going up hills. they don't understand that I HAVE to pedal harder just to keep up speed. and the guys who are "for real" on their ridiculous tarck bikes give me dirty looks for having a front brake.

who cares, as long as you're having fun.....right?

so true. There's a monstrous hill near my house (not the biggest but has perhaps one of the steepest sections in the city at the very top) that I have to hammer up like a maniac if I have any chance of carrying myself to the top. Every time I pass a geared cyclist I look like some ****er trying to show off when it's just a matter of *having* to do it just to clear the top.

my friend started building her bike up about a week or so ago and she brought it to her work place. one of her co-workers (who apparently builds road bikes), told her that if she likes her teeth the way they are, then she should consider getting something else.

i've never really had a problem with road cyclist until one tried to race me at a light.
i'm a winner

I have all of those to go with my fixed gear. I didn't spend that much on any of them, but still, I've got them.

If you're going to ride around in cutoffs, you may as well take some of those savings and spend it on a tin of

The only roadie I've dealt with is the owner of the super high-end shop in town. He's a jerk, but it's funny seeing him try and contain his anger at the fact I'm riding what I do.

Um... maybe for you. The more I ride, the more I plan on investing in most of that stuff, of the things I don't have already.

I have the spandex shorts and the helmet, plus I buy small things like tire levers and bar tape at the LBS. Dude's still a dink to me.

PS - you should change your shorts more than your shirt. Saddle sores FTL.

Perhaps I have an iron taint. I've done many 40+ mile rides with cotton boxers and jeans or gym shorts with no discomfort or ill effect. I have a lot of lycra crap as well, but sometimes it's a hassle when you just want to hop on your bike and ride.

Screw those high dollar cycling specific snacks... M&Ms, Fig Newtons, and Cheese Crackers FTW.

I think it's because of the "Jackass BFSSFG poseur tarck bicyclist of the day" thread. If you can keep up you fit in with the roadies. They even let the Fred's in when they can keep up.

Roadies hate everyone and they are all too fat for the sport.
