Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Stripped Lockring Threads

Hello,

So I JUST put a brand new pair of Alex DH 22 rims with no name high flange hubs (bought from Ben's) onto my fixie. I installed a Surly lockring with grease and a Dura Ace 15t cog. Within 2 days, the lockring was loose and I took it off to find I had stripped some of the threads where the lockring screws onto the hub. Bummer. The entire wheelset was 75 bucks so I am reluctant to spend 100 bucks rebuilding the wheel with a Formula hub or something. Does anyone know where to get single wheels? Do most retailers sell single rear wheels? Any other advice? The lockring still stays on, it is hanging on to the last 2-3 rows of threads and when I back-pedal I feel a little movement where the cog is traveling outwards until it connects with the lockring. Is this dangerous? I am hesitant to ride it like this.

first of all, it doesn't sound like your cog is on tight enough if you can actually feel it move when you backpedal. Also, I'd definitely get a new hub/wheel, it isn't safe to ride without a lockring or even with a compromised one. Most LBSs will build you up/sell you a rear wheel.

On a new wheelset you'll want to be checking lockring/cog tightness after every couple rides, if not more. Especially if you are brakeless you'll want to shorten the interval.
