I have done my reading, i dont know much about track/road bikes i use to be into flat ground. But i have just bought a 70's Schwinn, and i already know i am going to get haters and people ragging on me. But i would like to convert it to a fixie, the problem i am having is i understand the whole fixed gear track hub lock ring deal but people have told me a 700c wont work on this bike, its a 1982 Schwinn World Sport, if anyone can help me understand more about what changes im going to need to make for the conversion without bashing on me, then please help? Thank you for your time this isnt my bike, but this is the model its already converted to a single speed when i bought it i want to change the wheels and i know i am going to prolly have to change the crank (or atleast thats what i have been told, i will be getting a new chain

You sound confused. Is it a 70's Schwinn or a 1982 Schwinn World Sport? It will make a difference on how to answer your question.
In general I wouldn't convert either one. They are heavy beasts.

700c's work fine on 27" bikes. the only issue is if you decide to run brakes. you need a brake w/ enough pad adjustment to reach the braking surface on the rim. some stock 27 brakes have enough adjustment in their calipers to allow a 700c wheel.. some don't.

to put it in perspective. imagine putting a 20" bmw wheel on your schwinn. the brake obviously won't reach the wheel. this is the same principle w/ a 700c, just not as extreme. in otherwords. the 700c wheel is smaller than a 27"

haha sorry about that, yea its a world sport, it really doesnt seem that heavy to me, i mean i am fine with it, im not going to run brakes on it, i have short handle bars on it already, but here let me show you some wheels i was thinking of getting

do i need to change my crank also? and will the wheel conversion be pretty easy i mean i have a friend that is into fixies but i wanted to get other opinions, thank you for your help really, i am understanding more and more everyday

no you do not have to change your crank.. in reality all you need to do to convert your bicycle to a fixed wheel.. is swap out your rear wheel.. and shorten your chain...

nothing is really easy the first time around.. especially if it's all new to you.. but if you get your hands on a 700c wheel.. and mount it up in the drop outs... you will get an idea on how you'll need to manipulate your brake or pads... to accomodate the smaller diameter wheel.

what about that wheelset i posted will that work? i know its not top of the line or anything but will that work for the time being? and i need to get a new chain mine is rusted out

yes that wheelset will work fine. any 700c wheelset will work.. it's not the wheels that are in question.. it's the brake... it's a toss up if your current brake will reach the rim. .so when you go to brake.. it'll actually clamp down on the braking surface of the rim instead of squeezing your tire.

yea but im not going to run a brake i said. basically just for tricks in parking lots and stuff like that im not gonna be going like fast down streets and stuff

hmm.. yea.. that's how it starts... if the idea is in your head that you aren't goin' to do it... that means you will! i suggest pedals + clips + straps + helmet....

i play on getting pedals and straps but i think once i get a enough money im going to order that pair of 700c wheels wish me luck that they will fit !

The bike in my avatar is an '82 Schwinn Traveler, and old Schwinns are awesome!

700c wheels/tires fit just fine, and a Tektro 556 long reach front brake fits them perfectly (and is good for quick stops and avoiding needless law enforcement hassles).
