quad-gate vs not quad-gate clips
I have been contemplating my upcoming pedal/clip purchase for a while, and I've decided I would like some form of double strap setup. My question is: will I feel much difference between a quad-gate setup https://store.somafab.com/opfotoecl.html and a double-gate(?) setup https://store.somafab.com/padoststtoec.html? Also, would it be more advantageous to run two pairs of single-straps, or just go for the double-straps?

I find that with single cages the belts get out of round quickly and its hard to get your feet in. Quad or even double cage will keep the belts nicley open for you so its easier to get your feet in.

^ not quite
double gates (single gate for each strap) gives you the same "triangle" effect.
4x gates are the way to go. stronger, easier to get into, much snugger, comfortable...
seriously, i will never ever go back.
our household uses them on all (four) of our tarck bikes.

I've never ridden double straps, but I definitely prefer double clips - feels much more secure

Thanks for the great responses. Does anybody have any suggestions other than the Somas (the only ones I can find actually) for quad-gates? Also, I don't remember if I asked this in the o.p. but has anybody had experience with double-straps vs just two singles? My reasoning leads me to believe it's just aesthetics. I can't think of any reason why doubles would trump singles.

i've seen plastic 4x gates, but never used them; those i know that have switched immediately once they found steel ones. do they suck? probably not terribly, though i know plastic is far less durable than steel and could possibly flex. again, dunno for sure, but it's something to consider.
all-city also makes a four gate (they call it a mountain double) that resembles soma's design except has an additional bridge:
https://allcitycycles.com/products/co...untain_double/ their colors are anodized (vs soma's powedercoat).
i'm pretty sure i've seen other companies with variations of this, but it's likely they're all re-badged units of the same product.
all-city also make plastic ones:

as for singles vs doubles:
my gf rides the soma oppy 4x gates with double straps. loves them.
i ride mine with single straps. love them.
hers are the all-city doubles, mine are the campagnolo record straps and another bike with cineli straps.
i see no pro or con to either; initially, i thought the singles would shift around, but they don't.
hope that helps...

each strap of a double strap adjusts pretty independent of the other. you can pull the front strap in like an inch farther if necessary. probably more, not sure.

i should have specified i was asking about adjustment for length. however, i supposed im really looking for quite short in length. i have to go measure what i have my adjustable clips set to.

sp00ki, thanks for the great replies. I'm definitely going to get the quad gates + whatever decent-quality combo of straps I can find cheapest. The quads do look sturdier, and the allcity ones look pretty nice. Thanks again for the info.

Soma's come from a small company up in San Francisco. The quality of the Soma product is higher there's no ruff edge on soma's clips.
QBP, a big company copied Soma but if you look at both side by side you will see that the soma is worth the few extra $$$

just cut the straps down after tightening them and use buttons to make everything nice and clean.
(though that might not be what you mean at all)

Just threw down the cash on the Soma oppy quad-gates, a pair of MKS Sylvan Road's, and the Soma double-straps. I'm not sure about the double straps though. I've not really heard anything about the soma's durability, I guess we'll see if I should have put up the extra cash for better straps in a year or so.

Well, I guess I got here too late, but I'm still going to throw in my two cents. When I rode clips/straps I found the the quad gates gave me a less secure feeling than singles. The strap is what holds the foot to the pedal, the clip is more of a holder for the strap. With the quads I had less direct contact from my double straps than when I ran a regular single gate toe clip. I wore my straps tight too, so yankin' down on them with the quads would give me a little more discomfort than the regular single toe clip. I wasn't a huge fan of them.

Thanks LoRoK. I see where you're coming from. I hope it wont be a problem for me. a couple pairs of my shoes are pretty wide (skate style shoes) so I hope the quad-gates will allow for wearing different width shoes without readjusting the straps.
