Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? for the record I also had...

1 spare tube
my hat
1 bike pump.
2 15mm wrenches (long and short)
1 10mm wrench
1 8mm wrench
1 spoke wrench
3 tire levers
2 big bottles of water
1 U lock
1 7' kryptonie cable
1 Chain tool
1 Section of extra links
1 presta adapter
1 pressure gauge
Flat repair patches (tube and tire)
A bunch of pencils and **** for school

and FWIW the bags plenty light

I have a messenger style bag as well, I just don't see it being anywhere NEAR as comfortable.

Ya, do it.
You'll shave seconds off of your time.
In couple of weeks, that could add up to 10's of 1's of seconds.

You mean thisbag, described as "Toy Machine Hipster Canvas Messenger Bag"
Weak sauce

lol that's funneh, that's not even a messenger "style" bag, thats a straight up tote bag, book bag. no offense but if that's comfortable you'll love a messenger bag. if that's what people think is a messenger bag then no wonder they complain. I tried on a chrome the other day, it doesnt feel like a tote bag or any shoulder bag your mom got you.

then the guy below with the backpack chicken holder, you got yourself a messenger "style" bag too? is it the Toy Machine Hipster Sack too?

Backpacks that hang low or loose, that dont at least hug th load to your back, arent going to ride as well, but half teh people here are teens and students, they Should get backpacks because they carry their stuff walking not riding most of the day. That's why I'm getting a backpack but I may later get a messenger bag too. And the backpack I'm getting is high up, like the messenger bag it is better for riding.

everyone is always saying they suck, but then half of the people here have a crappy canvas tote bag or homemade junk that isnt anything like a messenger bag.

I think all these threads are funny, like when the new people post about why they should ride single speed and half the people responding think they mean fixed gear because they arent sure what the difference is themselves

that and short pants, hats, and all the other fashion threads in this forum, thank god there are many more fashion threads about actual bikes

in my defense, sir, as the OP i feel i should let you know that this thread originally had nothing to do with fashion at all. it was entirely about the functionality and comfort of backpacks vs. messenger bags.

Ive been using the same Jansport backpack for at least 9 years and it is still in great condition. I never knew much about messenger bags until i started riding a fixie this past summer. It's time for a change, and these bags look aight.

i believe a lot of kids who have fixed gear bicylces tend to buy messenger bags because they are around bike friends who have them or places like this forum, and realize they can b efficient for their needs. That is my case. I'm in no way trying to look like the rest of the fixed gear community with those bags. I just happen to like how some of them look and how i can swing the bag around to get stuff out without takin the bag off. I tend to swing my backback around everyday to take stuff out and it ussually just falls off my shoulder. No good. I just dont like the fact that if i am to where the bag and ride my bike, people will stereotype. I like the bags for my own reasons, not cuz i ride a fixie.

Yeah, and if you spend a lot of time in crazy busy rush hour Tokyo subways, then it is good to be able to swing the bag to the front otherwise it gets caught on people trying to squeeze out of the train!

because I have a pannier and I hate it but still have to use it some days. I don't like backpacks in general

I like mine because it's a nice Timbuk2 that I got at the thrift store for $3.

And because it sits better on my back and I can swing it right around when I need it.

I've been eyeballing the Timbuk2 Hemlock. Looks like a really nice backpack, If I could find a nice sturdy and cheap hiking bag I'd use that.

yeah i've stopped into REI to oggle **** and that hemlock in black has been calling to me.

doesn't seem substantial enough though, which is my only problem with their messenger bags.

they're durable as hell and strong, but they're lightweight which is good until you realize that if you pack it uncomfortably, it's uncomfortable. at least with a backpack there's less shifting around that might occur...

but with every well made heavier bag, the bag tries to keep its shape a little better and it seems more comfortable. at least that's my experience with my kemmer after switching from a timbuk2 L classic.
