Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? There are walkable clipless systems. Ask at your LBS.

I dont want to post another thread on this but as far as I can observe on this forum, nobody thinks Soma double straps are any good? Im not riding particulary hard, but I would like to improve on my skidding, and these single straps arent working out for me. Dont have the cash to put down on Toshis (probablly wont ever sadly) but was told by someone local that Somas would work for not-too-agro riding. Yes/no?

I spent years riding on bindas and christophes long before I'd even heard of toshi, and I never had any problems. I can't imagine the somas would be too miserable.

they're fine but
just not durable and as quality as toshis.
be prepared to replace them and not be 100% pleased in the meantime.
you wont get that "whoa these are nice" effect everytime you put your foot into them.

30 dollar somas x3 = one long-lasting pair of toshis

or just keep your eye on ebay/bikeforums/velospace/CL for used toshis.

word is the exustars from the uk are a decent and inexpensive middle-ground, but I have no experience.

I just got my 1st pair of gr9s, put the clips on, and didn't see how they accomodated straps. At least not in the way all my cage pedals do. They don't have that hole in the bridge sections to thread straps through.

You need to get a longer set of screws for the clips and use those as a means of holding the other strap in, along with the one section already available on the pedal.

They keep the straps from slipping if you're an extreme keirin rider. That, and prevent people from jacking your Toshis.

@Oeuf: GR-9 tabs break off really fast IME.

mine were on for a few months. my friend was riding it around out of the clips and he went into a driveway right as the pedal was at the bottom. it snapped off that tab, then a few days later the other one broke off. no biggie, i never really used them.

That's not what the buttons are for. Toestrap buttons are designed to make it easier to grasp a toestrap and tighten the strap while riding, when using a setup where you don't use the whole buckle (only the roller). For fixed gear bikes, this is especially useful. Keirin racers feed their straps all the way through the buckles and have no real use for buttons. Buttons are more of a rodie and bike tourist thing.

no buttons included, but if anyone interested in buying gr9s with xs to xl adjustable mks steel clips and gray toshi doubles, let me know. the gr9s have nickel caps and also long bolts to keep the double straps in line.

i had soma doubles on my bike, they slip like crazy. i left the rear one untucked so i could pull it tight every ride and loosen when i stop (like you're supposed to) and they would just slip. I had to tuck them into the buckle to try and keep them from slipping, but they still would unexpectedly slip when i pulled hard on them. it got to the point where I didn't feel safe pulling on them to stop. i had a brake so it was okay, but brakeless... I would have had to walk imo. I ended up selling my whole set up on craigslist...
