Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Thingees for the rear dropout

Sorry for using such technical language and maybe this is the epitomy of laziness but...I had to change a flat on my rear tire and replacing the wheel at the right tension and putting it in evenly was a bit of a pain; not overly difficult but still a pain. (At first I thought my wheel needed truing until I saw that it was in a bit crooked.) It occurs to me that someone must sell something that attaches to the horizontal dropouts that act as "stops" so replacing the wheel requires that you just set it against the "stops" for instant eveness and proper tension.

Thank you.

It is called a chain tensioner, and they cost between $10-50.

They actually go over the axel and hook over the back of the dropouts and when u tighten the tensioner, it pulls the wheel backwards, tightening the chain.

They make it easy to fine tune chain tension and get the wheel aligned.

What you're describing is typically called a chain tug. Tensioners take up slack in singlespeeds, though tugs are frequently (and to my mind, incorrectly) called "tensioners." And while I'm whining about terminology, it sounds like this post and the OP are referring to track fork ends, not horizontal dropouts. I'm not trying to be an ass, but referring to tensioners and dropouts could actually create headaches in making the right purchase.

Bikes: Check the sig to find out

A surly tuggnut is what you're looking for. I have one and it does it job well. Works on both conversions and track bikes
