Peugeot UO8 Upgrade

Well hello!

I have been reading the archives and trying to gather as much information as I can regarding upgrading a Peugeot to a fixed gear bike. I know a fair bit now, but would like to know the answer to this question before I do anything more.

I came across a very good condition Peugeot UO8 frame, just the frame, and want to build it up into a fixed gear bike. I also wanted to try and use the Shimano UN72 with Phil Wood cups for the new bottom bracket. I have been able to track down a UN72, but it is 73mm x 107mm. Will this fit on my Peugeot?

I understand that these are rather hard to come by and didn't want to disregard this until I knew for sure it wouldn't work.

Thanks for any help you can provide

You're going to pay through the nose just for the cups. Wait a month or so for Velo-Orange to release their French bb, and just make sure to get one before they run out. You'll certainly come out way ahead on price.

Last info I saw, on the VO Imports Blog, said by May 1. Since we're past that, we can assume soon; apparently VO has a whole batch of new stuff arriving soon (again, read the blogs from VO and VO imports). Word is 35-35$ range.

Thank you very much.
Exactly what I needed to know.

I've got 2 old Peugeots, a '75 U08 with cottered cranks, and one a little newer (late 70s, early 80s maybe), both with french threads. I turned the '75 into a ss, and I'm converting the newer one into a fixie.

And I restored another '75 recently for someone that had been a JIS crank installed on a french spindle (wobble!). Getting a French-threaded bb is a problem. My local LBS told me not to even take mine apart unless I had a spare on hand.

I saw a '75 PX-10 two weekends back at a swap meet, just the frame. And I asked about french bb's and headsets. He said that's why he had the frame for sale. He bought the bike just for parts and stripped it, which I consider kind of a drag. It was a beautiful frame too, but now it's someone else's problem.

My neighbor bought a Phil Woods bb for his PX-10. Cost is $100+, if I remember right.

The Velo-Orange option seems to be reasonable, but hopefully it wont take many more months before something french threaded is released.

My question still remains. I don't know much about the size of this Peugeot UO8 bottom bracket. I know that the UN72 has removable cups and I have a 73mm x 107mm BB. Will this work, or will it be too large (73mm) and too short (107mm)?

i used a 70x107 spindle on my peugeot when i used the stock cups and an italian spindle...i needed a 110 spindle for my cranks back then cuz i was using road doubles...but a 107 should work depending on the cranks. i think a 73 may be too large.
