Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: Mercier Kilo TT Pro, Schwinn Le Tour Conversion, Free Spirit polo beater, Cervelo P2T, aluminum tandem.

I heard they were more or less good bikes. But for that much money, I would get the Kilo TT Pro. My reasoning ... the Kilo TT Pro has nicer parts, costs less, has a brake (if you want that) and isn't drilled for a water bottle cage.

This has Wellgo pedals which I think might be nicer though, and a nicer saddle.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I think the fork on this bike is a little fugs.

Bikes: 1972 Paramount Track, 1972 Paramount P13 Road, 1972 Paramount Tandem, 1986 Paramount Road, Merckx MXL, Gunnar Cross Hairs, Samson Illusion NJS, KHS Aero Track, Titus Racer X 29er, Tom Palermo Custom Touring

Why is not being drilled for water bottle cages a good thing?

Because if I need water, I'll just carry it in my bag.

If you take out the ugly screws, water will get in the frame and rust it out.

I pretty much draw the line at no superfluous stuff attached to my bike. If I didn't there'd be a cage for my water bottle, a place for a pump, and a place for a u-lock, a pannier, a saddle bag, mud guards, top tube pad, yadda yadda yadda.

Why put it on my bike when I can put it in my bag?

Seems okay but with the exchange rate and shipping and bursary fees, this bike will hit 700$CDN or so.

If he wants a basic starter bike, he could eBay, maybe?

Some people don't need em. I don't care that I have water bottle mounts on my bike since it makes no difference to me, but riding fixed means there's no safe way to reach down and grab a bottle while in motion anyway, so I might as well just carry it in the bag.

Me reaching down to my downtube while my knees are spinning up and down strikes me as idiotically unsafe. Note the use of "me" and "my" to denote personal preference and a lack of passing judgement on whatever anyone else does on their bike.

Get a Rocky Mountain Boroughs (Canadian company). That's a VERY solid bike. It costs a bit more, but it's worth it.

It's incredibly easy to use a water bottle mount on a fixed gear. Incredibly.

I find it puzzling that you might find it to be "idiotically unsafe"

Skid, you might find someone selling the Kilo TT on eBay who will ship to Canada.

Also, getting water from a cage is easy on fixed gear ... I might be killing my own point, but it is harder to get water from a bag than from a cage, actually. But still, it isn't very hard. Your legs don't actually block access to the cage.
