suggestions for a new frame

right. i love my conversion, but it's been several years now and i'm starting to dream of a new frame. something that's not gaspipe-heavy or a hideous lime green. so, what are the frames that i should start looking at?

my "requirements" are:
a) track-ish geometry. doesn't have to be extreme
b) steel
c) decent tubing

my "likes" are:
a) lugs
b) dual crown forks
c) threaded headsets
d) removable decals

my "i don't care abouts" are
a) bar spins or anything to do with them
b) njs
c) weird colours

i'd like to keep it under $600 if possible. must ship to canada.

thanks!

Sounds like a Bob Jackson would be pretty close.

the vigorelli does look pretty smashing. i've always thought of 631 as "comfy" tubing... do you ride one? is it "comfy"?

i can't think of any modern lugged bikes w/ track ends within your budget. a decent lugged 80s track frame will run you 250-450 depending mainly on mfg and condition.

Yeah kinda what I was thinking...New, Quality, Lugged, $600...that's a tall order.
I did spot this "PB GREEN: Lugged Cro Moly Track Frame and Fork" on BikeIsland.com for $250:

However higher quality could probably be found for the same amount of money if you're ok with previously owned.

Soma Rush...it's not lugged but it is made w/ good tubing and decals are removable. You can buy a threaded or unthreaded for for it, too.

IRO Angus-reynolds 631, threaded fork, black.

I think both those are good frames. I have a Jamis Sputnik which I love but I don't think they sell just the frame and it definitely doesn't have lugs or removable decals.

leader frame? xD

frymaster 05-31-09 01:13 AM

well, the lugs were only a 'nice to have'... i do reaize that requirements plus the nice to haves for $600 is near impossible :) and that bike island frame actually kinda sares me a bit... and not in a good way. looks like somehting built solely for it's marketability and with a price point that speaks of some serious corner-cutting.

the soma rush does look very tempting. tange tubes, threaded option with a dual crown fork... and cheaper by a long shot than the vigorelli...

Soma Delancey if you have to have the lugs...only it's not track geometry. It's also above your price max. I think the Rush will suit you fine. I have contemplated getting one many a time, but found a screaming deal on a Steamroller.

alien
kazane

erichsia 05-31-09 08:37 PM

An Alien or an IRO Angus does sound like it would fit the bill. A Bob Jackson would give you higher grade tubing & lugs combined, and is reasonably priced at $560 US. The shipping costs from England are pricey though at nearly $150 US :(

what's up with all the leader hate on this forum?

Canada? Get a Marinoni pista! Not lugged, but the zona tubing blows everything else out of the water. Great bike, great price.

they suck.

adaminlc 05-31-09 11:36 PM

What about the Surly Steamroller. Steel, lugged, just off of track geometry.

Geordi Laforge 05-31-09 11:37 PM

steamroller does not have lugs.

one more vote for an alien frame...they look sharp

i concur they look sharp... but i have concerns about this 'not all brake sizes' will fit thing. i recall it being the source of much upset during the proposed group buy some time ago. also, generic 4130 tubing is a big down compared to some of the other frames out there. lugs are nice, but if it comes down to better tubing or lugs, better tubing wins.

Too true. Looked again and it is just the fork.

any company that puts out error-ridden garbage like the 721 has lost my respect and business.

that still doesn't answer my question...

erichsia 06-01-09 09:10 PM

search "Leader, fork ends" and be enlightened.

Geordi Laforge 06-02-09 03:30 PM

...and dont forget their "handmade track frame" that they still havent revealed what the tubing is other than "trust us -- it's amazing. we just cannot say what it is because we're not allowed just yet"...it's been nearly a year and since when does a framebuilder need permission to state what their tubing is?

I wonder how many people were scammed by that one thinking they're getting some higher grade reynolds but really it's just 4130.
