ugh. shaddap with the racism nonsense already. race wasn't an issue in this thread at all until you made it one, carleton. not to mention the fact that your arguments are worthless because the bike really was stolen! so get over it and stop making yourself a victim ffs.
if you check back a page, the first mention of race comes in post #9. OP says 'less savory' and 'someone'...anything else has been inferred by the reader.
then again, sometimes it's just fun to get mouthy (keyboardy?) on the interweb...

It could be considered "classist" to assume a nice bike in a poor part of town is stolen, but to assume "poor" or "less than savory" and "black" are intended as synonyms shows a lot more race bias than the OP ever did.

Lulz at some of the replies in this thread.
Writing name/number on the rim liner is a good idea but I ride tubulars
Business card down the seat tube is also a good idea. (note to self, get biz cards)
Serial numbers aren't a failsafe as they can be filed off or nonexistent. The PO of my frame scratched his UK ZIP where a serial would go. That's why I can't tell who made my frame

elusive double post!
I talked to the bike's owner yesterday, he said they pulled up to the house w/ his bike sitting out front, there was someone sitting outside also. He said he wanted his bike back, the guy said he had bought it for $10, so my friend offered him $6 (all he had on him) and got his bike back. He said it was fine but showed evidence of an out of control ride/emergency bailout!

But even if we believe him... who steals a fairly nice bike and then sells it for $10? Someone who just likes stealing ****?

Ok so it's pretty obvious the guy who "bought" the bike for $10 was the one who stole it in the first place, so he lost nothing and came out $6 ahead in the deal.

I think that even in the hardcore ghettos, kids THESE DAYS are learning how to use the internet. BUT, some of the older guys (like 30 year olds) might not have ever used it in school, so they are completely unfamiliar.
Just saying, I could see how someone would think it's a cheap bike and wouldn't have the know-how/effort to find out the real value of it.
