best airline?
relocating to portland june 6th.
was going to take the train but not too into the whole 48 hour train ride ordeal.
so im gonna fly.
i've never flown with a bike before. a buddy of mine told me i should just go pick up a "bike box" at a lbs and disassemble my whip.
question is, what airline is most friendly about this? what should i expect the airline to charge?
thanks!

be careful about box size...I recently shipped a bike and because I was a hair over the max size for standard shipping they dimensionally weighted the bike and wanted $222 for FedEx ($255 for UPS).

Might look into Amtrak Express. They offer a pretty reasonable freight shippign service. It'll take a few days to get there, but it'll almost certainly be cheaper than putting your bike on the plane, and it'll probably get treated better too.

Give them a call and see what kind of rates they're offering.

Charlie: Ray, all airlines have crashed at one time or another, that doesn't mean that they are not safe.
Raymond: QANTAS. QANTAS never crashed.
Charlie: QANTAS?
Raymond: Never crashed.
Charlie: Oh that's gonna do me a lot of good because QANTAS doesn't fly to Los Angeles out of Cincinnati, you have to get to Melbourne! Melbourne, Australia in order to get the plane that flies to Los Angeles!

There's a real cool LBS by my house. They gave me a real nice bike box (lots of padding and straps) and are packing it all up for me for $20 (box included) not too bad.
Going to ship it out to Portland, OR tomorrow via UPS. wish me luck!
And to malsr. I normally do too. But for some odd reason, Jet Blue was significantly cheaper this time. Hmm
