Rest or not?
Your legs are shot. You’ve been climbing a lot and your legs burn. You know you should probably sit out for the day but your mind is full of kindling and every time you think about a bike is potentially a match. Do you piss on the pile and water yourself down with mediocre television or do you strike the flint and watch as your body lights and burns up yet more miles?

I dunno, if you're trying to train to be the ultimate spandex monkey then maybe a day off will help gain the speed to hold the front of the peleton on your next crit (or however those racers refer to it) but if riding your bike makes you happy and you'll be happier if you go for a ride, then by all means, throw on the spandex and the clunky shoes and shuffle yourself out the door.
My body is currently telling me that I can't continue to run 40 miles per week unless I figure out a way to consume more calories. I can't figure out how to eat more and still eat healthy though, my stomach is pissed about me cramming it full constantly, it wants to feel hungry occasionally. I really hate it when my serious running starts to conflict with mt recrational riding. If one of them is going to have to take a break, it isn't going to be the bike.

I read some article about the training methods lance uses by that carmicheal guy, or something. Heh. Only thing i remember other than how to mispell the guys name is that he said the most common mistake was overtraining. You can't really improve anaerobic much but you can improve aerobic training. So to answer the question if you want to improve yourself then by your description it is time to lay off the bike.
Improving myself is not one of my goals so i would ride if i felt like it or needed to go someplace. There's two books by the guy at the library i work at, goto ur local library and check one out if u want to read something intelligent on the subject.
