Quill stem question

Do quill stems work with threadless headsets?

Also, does the nitto technomic work? It's the short quill one. It's on benscycle.

This is a wonderful thread. It ought to be stickied. Heehee. I thought I was a bit behind.

I read about it on one of those bicycle maintenance books. You might as well read up, too.

if by work you mean raise your riding position, then yes. but you won't be able to use one with a threadless headset.

I think that's what he's getting at. Threadless headsets are great as far as maintenance goes. But there's limited height adjustment.

Yep. Unless you left some spacers in there when you cut the steerer tube, you're pretty much grootzed as far as raising your cockpit is concerned.

No such animal as a threadless to threaded adapter, however, you can buy a threadless steerer tube extender to raise the stem height. The problem with a quill stem is that it is designed to fit inside the steerer tube, and a threadless headset requires the adjuster to also fit inside the steerer tube with the stem clamping on the outside.

Bikes: yes

I'm not positive, but I think that you're confused. I think the product you linked to allows you to use a threadless CK headset as a threaded one, and/or vice versa. It converts your existing *headset*, not the interface.

There is a threaded-to-threadless stem adaptor. It is a quill shaft with a blank to which you clamp a threadless stem.

An adaptor to allow the use of a quill stem with a threadless headset strikes me as silly and difficult. It would only work with 1" forks, which are increasingly rare. It would require somebody to preload the headset bearings, clamp *something* to the steerertube that's *not* the stem, and then you'd have to remove the starfangled nut and insert a quil stem, hoping that the internal diameter of your threadless fork is correct.

It kind of boggles the mind.

The Nitto Technomic definitely is not short.
