Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bay Area Bikes

I've been thinking about buying a fixed gear bike for a while now. And I just got some extra cash, so I thought I'd take the plunge. I live in Oakland, CA. Does anyone know of a place in the Bay Area that has a good selection of fixies and knows what they are doing? Please help!

Bikes: Can't stand the damn things...

I'll second that one! Their shop on Stanyan and Frederick has some GREAT fixies.

hmm...when i saw this thread, i thought to myself, WOW! someone's talking about my shop on bikeforums!! but...meh...

bay area bikes is a pretty cool shop, but if you're looking for fixed gear stuff, you'd probably want to go elsewhere. i mean, we can order everything and assemble it if you want, and we have a pretty decent selection of used bikes, and a pretty knowledgable staff. as far as i know, i'm the only one there who rides fixed, and i usually kinda take charge if i'm in the shop when someone's asking about fixed gear stuff...usually though, i'm not in the actual shop as i work in the warehouse...but still, it's worth checking out if you're in the area.
