Standard Size for Riser Handlebars?

Wisdom of the Crowds question (or an answer for a new guy like myself.)

I am going to get riser handlebars and chop them down. Doing some research, I notice that there are alot of different sizes.

While I know ultimately (it's up to me) is there an industry standard riser handlebar size for fixie/ss bikes?

Not the width - but the amount of height. I've seen 20, 30, 40 and 50mm Rise.

Is 30 the standard? 50 too much?

Many thanks,
CD

You gotta try them out dude.

I like 40 degrees of rise on my bars; I'm running both a Race Face Diablous on my DJ, and an Azonic strip bar on my 29er, and they both have around 40 degrees.

What size clamp are you going to run?

Bikes: A few BSO's.

My Kalloy bars have a 25mm rise and come in a 50mm as well. It's interesting that you bring this up.
I have a positive rise on my stem to get the right fit but I could get a bar with more rise and switch the stem to negative rise.... no more dorky looking stem.
Thanks for making me think cheifdolo.

I have a 50mm (2" rise) handle bar in the mail...

I'll see what they look like. If they are no good, I'll return. In hindsight, I think I should have bought a 30cm (slightly over 1".)

I just wasn't sure if there was a standard that most people use with pros/cons, etc. Sounds like there still may be, it just hasn't surfaced yet

Regards,
CD

i might also add that you can find them in different degrees of backsweep, which may make a noticeable difference in comfort and lean. i noticed that i feel more comfortable with very little backsweep, ( so that the bars are pretty much straight across) as opposed to something that curves toward you making you knuckles point outwards.

i agree with das pyrate about the grip tape. if you are considering ourys, go grab a handfull of gummi bears, make a fist and do push-ups until you hands get all sweaty. if you enjoy this, oury's are right for you. If not. get some tape.

Au contraire, I run Ourys on my 29er's risers and I find them to be just lovely.

Hey Ewurl -

On your FLICKR page - the hotknife: how wide are those bars and how many inches are the rise on your bars?

Thanks,
CD
