backpack thread
i know there has been a few backpack threads(and I have read them). What backpack do you guys use or recommend? I have looked at the seagull and the sag. I think I am interested in getting the sag delta force 1. I almost bought the mash a few months ago but could not bring myself to support that esp living in san fran. Although now I kind of regret it after going over the sag mash thread.

I use the detachable day-pack from my Deuter Quantum 55+10. It's the perfect size for tools/tubes, some snacks, and a nalgene. Can even through an extra tshirt in there if ya want.
Doubt it'll get ya as much cred as a SAG or something though. |
I am looking for something to take to school and put small amounts of groceries in. I don't really care about street cred but would still prefer it to look good. I don't even ride a fixed gear anymore but I figure this is the best place to post about this.

did ya see the new timbuk2 bags. the only think i don't like is it has no across the chest strap. they are pretty good prices though
|
I'd love to see some detailed reports on the new baileyworks backpack and the newish reload midpack.

Something about sag just rubs me the wrong way. Aren't they basically the jansport of japan?
|
anyone here have a crumpler mahoubar?
thinking of getting one soon |
sag is like bape
zuper expensive urban wear they are really nice bags though there's a delta force for $160 on trick track if you're interested |
I was really, really close to getting the SAG backpack a few months ago. If I was still in school with books to haul around, I'd have probably gone for it.
Then again, if I was still in school I wouldn't have been able to justify $300 on a backpack. Catch 22, kinda. If you've got the dough to blow, I say go for it. And post pix. |
Ah FUK SAG and Hipster bags. :D
I wanna Try a CIERZO 18 from ARC'TERYX, $50 bucks. Looks super light and very durable, has a waist strap too. In gold for visibility. http://content.backcountry.com/image...ARC0643/GD.jpg Comes in Blue n Black too. http://butuyokuannex.cocolog-nifty.c...rzo18bp002.jpg http://butuyokuannex.cocolog-nifty.c...rzo18bp003.jpg http://image.blog.livedoor.jp/mamuds...4-s.JPG?160213 |

Anyone tried the sealline urban backpack? I'm looking for something that's decidedly waterproof, and this is one of the cheaper backpacks with that promise (also the ortleib above)?
|
like i said ortleib rocks less sweaty back comfy and huge capacity even the velocity is big
|
I have two bags I use for diff. purposes. My backback is a deuter superbike - I removed the water bladder, but love the vented back. It also has the waist & chest straps...rock solid on my back without making me hot as hell on a commute, etc. I can put a change of clothes & toiletries in there with my nalgene bottle on the outside or in one of the sidepockets.
I also have a Chrome Citizen...works great & very versatile. |
ive been looking at the velocity. do you get that pattern in sweat on your back?
|
That Ortlieb Velocity looks great.
|
i recently bought a bailey works citizen and so far i am very happy with it. i get the impression that it will last a long time
|
I've got a Banjo Brothers Large Commuter Backpack; it's alot cheaper than the Ortliebs, or even the Seallines I think. 2,000 cubic inches, waterproof, U-lock holder on the side, tab for rear light (kind of nice not to have to move light from bike to bike), cell phone holder (don't talk while you're riding! But it's kind of nice not to have to rummage through your bag and you'd nomally have to buy seperately) on the straps.
It isn't a sweet $300.00 bag, but I swear by them! I guess see for yourself haha: http://banjobrothers.com/products/01152.php Good luck! |

http://www.kudubikes.co.uk/shop/imag...ebvelocity.jpg arrived in 4 days, amazing shipping great bag for it's price The only thing people complain about is the lack of compartments, but for groceries and other things, I don't think it matters as much |
The "bikepacking" guys who go exploring on mountain bikes and camp out are a good resource for picking a backpack. I've checked the reviews at http://www.bikepacking.net/category/reviews/packs/ and two that are highly recommended are the Osprey and the Ergon. The Osprey Talon is pretty legendary for adventure sport types (running/biking/climbin with a backpack) and the Ergon is specifically designed for biking.
http://www.ergon-bike.com/gb/en/home http://www.bikepacking.net/reviews/p...talon-22-pack/ What you want is a bag that fits on your body right when in the cycling position so your shoulders don't get wrecked, has some separation from your back so you don't get as sweaty but remains snug enough that it doesn't move around on you, and then is as durable/waterproof/etc. as you can get. |
I just ordered the Ortlieb Velocity in the Creme color.
It seems like a great bag, I didn't need anything too large and I wanted something waterproof. It lacks compartments, but this can be remedied by adding a smaller pouch to contain tools, keys, and other smaller items. I have been using the same Jansport bag for awhile now, but I needed something tougher. The Jansport bag will be perfect for just carrying a couple things. |
Right now I have a grey Burton bag someone gave me, but are there any bags that prevent sweating? I have to wear a jersey on my 3.5 mile ride to school, then change into a tshirt so I don't show up with a river running down my back.
|
It looks as though the Ortlieb bag would keep the back a bit cooler than a regular backpack. Some bags have a mesh backing that keeps the back cool as well.
I will report my experience with the Ortlieb Velocity when I get it. |

the inside is just one empty hole and the front pocket doesn't hold much so you might want to spring for their organizer pouch if you have a bunch of small stuff to carry. i use it every day on my commute to work and it holds a pair of sneakers, jeans, shirt, gmat textbook, two u locks, a small tool bag, bike pump, trixie tool, and some other stuff. perfect size for daily use but now i kinda wish i got the large for those days when i have to haul a bunch of crap (the large is over 2x as big as the small however so i dunno if it'd be practical for daily use). i have no stability problems when using the chest strap (never really need the waist strap), even when spinning down a large hill at 120rpms+ over the shoulder visibility is good- you get used to looking around your side more than over your shoulder (the top of the bag sometimes obstructs that view a little but not by much) its also on sale at ems.com for right now something like 88$. ive gotten a lot of compliments on how the bag looks. when shopping for a bag, i compared this to the waterproof ortlieb and the freight backpack. i chose the sealline because of price, simplicity (not so many straps everywhere), back ventilation (though the ortlieb has it too), the unique closure system (i like that there's no velcro involved) and cause i thought it looked the best. edit-- if you're not planning on using this backpack while on a bike, the back ventilation won't work properly since your back will be making contact with the non-ventilated lower portion of the bag. hopefully this review will help someone looking for a bike-specific bag |

this forum sucks. |
I just picked up a second-hand R.E.Load backpack and it's a godsend. Huge, well made, burly as hell, and can be expanded/cinched down as needed. A bit strappy, but oh well.
When I don't need the huge size, I'll keep using my old Metropolis. When I can get away with even less, I'm all about my Mountainsmith lumbar pack. That little bag has proven itself worth its weight in gold. |
I really like those little lumbar bags.
I bet it's comfortable too where it's positioned. |
