Which rear cog to get? (52t on chainring)

I need to order a new rear cog for my conversion. I have 52 teeth on my chainring and was told to get an 18t cog. I want a nice "all around" ratio, I'll just be using the bike to cruise around. Can anyone give me some pointers or confirm that this is the right one to order before I do? I am kind of a noob when it comes to fixies but I'm working on it so any help would be great!

a lot of people recommend 70 gi. Find a cog that will take you close to that for starters.

Its more of just a cruising bike for rides around town and some downtown fun. Nothing major, maybe like 10-15 miles at most.

How do you calculate patches again, I forget the link for the calculator.

Nvm. Rabbit's working again.

52/19 seems like a good combo for anything.

If You've got a road bike, pop it in the large ring, and find a rear gear you like riding the big ring in. Report back with the sizes of the front and rear.

18 or 19 looks good, though; I'm assuming Orlando is entirely flat.

A little more seriously, I find 48:16 to be pretty much ideal for me as an all-around ratio. That's 3:1, close to the same for you would be 52:17. Since you mention you'll just be cruising around, you might like 18 or 19 a little better.

I run 52x18. SS road bike. I like it but might go to 52x19. I don't encounter too many hills but it can be very difficult if you dont pick up speed going into them. On the flats I can pretty much fly.

i'm riding 52/18 and it's alright, for me.

are you a noob to fixies or bikes in general? if you're a noob in general I say go with the 19 because you probably don't have the muscle to push the 18 cog. 78 gear inches is not easy, plus you will probably benefit from spining faster with the 19 cog.

hills will kill you with the 18 cog if you don't know how to take a hill.

If you're stuck with the 52 up front, definitely go for the 19. I started off on this and I could absolutely kill it...all except this terrible incline I have on my way home. That slowed me down but I know it was a lot more managable on the 19...I wouldn't have made it on an 18!

do you enjoy replacing your tires all the time because you only have one skid patch?

I'd say that, too, if it were 4 or 6 skid patches, but I would bet he'd burn a flat spot into a tire in less than a week, if he skids on one skid patch.
