I was one of 2 riders this summer who did the Seattle Tour de Cure century on a fixed gear. 101 miles, around 6500' elevation gain. You can watch the gradual degredation of my physical state in video by searching out my username (same as here) on Qik.

I will likely do other century rides and maybe even some 200k brevets on the singlespeed side, but certainly not fixed. Totally kicked my arse harder than any 300k or double I've ridden.

I know at least one young (30's) guy who's done the aids/lifecycle ride in CA twice on an old fixed conversion. That's 500 miles in a week or so.

Quite a few riders over in the LD forum doing long brevets (600k, 40h limit; 1000k, 75h limit; 1200k, 90h limit) on fixed gear.

that's crazy guys. I would never do over 100 miles on a FG. I have, however, done 40-50 mile rides. But there is a big difference b/w 50 miles and 100 miles...

Me and my roommate rode from Vancouver to Victoria on fixed gears, which is about 65km each way. It was super fun.

What is the least efficient way to ride on variable inclines / decents for long distances?
A: One fixed gear.

Its still fun though.
