I wish it were that easy. I also checked this right away, but there is an orange stripe on the rim above the braking surface that is clearly visible.

I firmly believe it was just a tire defect. I've switched back to folding tires and haven't had an issue. If the same thing happens again, I might accept it was something mechanical other than a production defect.
