Origin-8 vs. Eighthinch - Cranksets

Is one better than the other? I know they're both lower end or value-priced (whatever you want to call it) just like the Pake I'm running now, which I've been very happy with. Now I'm shopping cranksets for another build, and have narrowed it down to the Origin-8 and Eighthinch. Done plenty of research so I know what else is out there at higher pricepoints, but not interested in any of those for this build. They're both $50 shipped, so the price is right.

Both are 46t, 130bcd, and offered in various colors. Arms on both look like road doubles, but Eighthinch does have one advantage, in that it comes in 160mm arms vs. 165mm on the Origin-8. Also, I know Eighthinch is 1/8", but Origin-8 doesn't specify, so I need to know that.

So is there any reason I should choose on over the other? Hoping some of you can chime in on the durability and fit/finish. I've only seen pics...never seen either in person.

Unless your bike is tiny the 160 cranks are going to be too small.

I have a Scrambler frame on the way from the group buy so I think its gonna be the 1/8" for mine just to keep a lil continuity.

This will be going on the upcoming build for my gf, so a smaler frame where 165 is fine but 160 is better. Not sure exactly what frame yet, but at this point I'm considering a 47 KiloTT stripper, 49 Moto Track, or 49 Kilo WT.

As tarcky as it is, I do prefer the purple Origin8 over the white Eighthinch though...lol.

Or maybe a low bottom bracket that causes pedal clip going through corners.

I have the polished 1/8" and really like it aside from back side. Looks a little cheap but how many people really look at the backside of your crank set.

I've got the Origin-8 crankset. The chainring it came with (the champagne colored one) is 3/32".

I haven't had any real problems with it. It looks as nice in person as it does in pictures I've seen -- that is, good finish but nothing special. I had a minor issue with a shard of metal around the pedal threads. I'm not sure where that came from.

With a 103mm bottom bracket, it gives a nice 42mm chainline.

I see the eighth-inch crank recommends a 107mm bottom bracket. I'd want clarification about that.

I've been running the Origin 8 crankset for about 1.5-2 years and it is holding up nicely. The mechanics at the LBS commented on how good it looked when I had to stop by for something awhile back, which surprised me, since I didn't get the the bike or cranks there.

IMO too many people over think the parts they put on their bikes. I've been commuting 20-30 miles a day, 6 days a week, on crappy FMF cranks for three years. Just keep up your regular maintenance/inspections and you'll be fine.

Ended up going with the Origin8 for this build. Still gathering parts so haven't installed it or tested it out yet. Initial impressions are that they look/feel pretty solid, and should work just fine on the conversion it's going on.

I have the EighthInch in 165mm and it seems pretty decent. The arms are very stiff, and the weight is reasonable:

Left arm: 202g
Right arm: 332g
46T ring: 69g
Steel CR bolts: 20g

Like golfer007 stated, the back side of the drive arm looks sort of cheap, but it's not a big deal.

Which origin8 did you get? I bought the ones on wheel&sprocket that said they were 3/32", but came as 1/8", so they had to send me a new chainring.

The backside of my Pake's spider is far worse.

This style, not the rebadged Bulletproof cranks. This build is gonna be a ss, so 5mm difference in length doesn't really matter.

You should pick crank arm length based on riding since you do that all the time vs. picking a length that is too short for your legs just so you can corner harder.

Me, too. I can't find a clear answer anywhere on the interwebs. Lots of vague and contradicting numbers in all of the threads that I searched.

What bottom bracket (68mm) size paired with the EighthInch single speed cranks will give a 42mm chainline?

I took a bike to my lbs a few years back, in search of a bottom bracket. I asked the mechanic how he worked out which size to use. He replied that they kept a decent supply in stock and he simply used trial and error to choose the right one (no doubt there was some experience involved as well). Of course, if you don't like bike shops ...
