i spent 41 dollars last night on a surly 19t and a lockring. for the first day on my fixed gear, all i can say is it's... hard.

Keep at it - you'll get it. Once you get used to it, going back to coasting and having brakes is hard. I had a dude I worked with that kept wanting me to try out his bikes - I've almost fell over several times because I forgt that it freewheeled, and didn't remember what brakes were... Kind of the opposite of most people's first fixed experience...
