Is this a good idea? SA 5-speed on Kilo WT
I had so many requests for a bike like a Steamroller at a good price that I did the Kilo WT - which is selling great. {thanks for the ideas}
While I liked the sample so much that I thought; 'wow, way not a bike like this with internal hub?' I mean some people in areas like Austin, Seattle, San Francisco, etc have hills but want simple commuter / winter bikes. So I got a sample of this KILO WT5 - which is with a 5 speed SA hub and bar-con I love it, my wife thinks it is over the top and beyond what people want in this type bike [she likes her UNO] What do you think? http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC05191.jpg http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC05194.jpg http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC05197.jpg http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC05200.jpg http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC05202.jpg http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t...r/DSC05210.jpg We get $429 for a Kilo WT; so I thought maybe we should make this an extra $10 per extra gear [$469} Thoughts? Ideas? |
Like it, but am holding out for s3x ;)
|
Hell yes.
I just noticed the bar end shifter, double hell yes. |
cable housings look hideous....but....I was thinking of doing this same build with a WT or similar frame.
Throw in some studded tires and I'll send a check |
Yes, yes, yes!
|
My uneducated opinion would be to say to do this to the phantom cross uno. Sell it with 30mm slick tires, drop bars with standard drop levers, fenders maybe. Build the wheels with some decent silver rims. And, offer it with a silver seatpost, stem, and cranks.
Do a classic or rivendell inspired run, get a few made in British racing green or some of the more retro colors the kilo already comes in. |
I think it's awesome, but it could possibly just be the curiosity of the internally geared hub.
|
I agree that an s3x would be way cooler, but who knows if it's ever coming out.
I feel like I should mention here also that I was all set to spend $400 but I got tired of waiting for the FCU to come in in my size, so I went with something else. |

Not to be a dick, but do IH bikes 'fit in' on the Singlespeed/Fixed forum?

i like it but....
you need to deck it out as a commuter. throw a set of planet bike eco fenders and eco rack on there and sell it for 500 and you have a winter bike that just needs studded tires(don't sell it with those though, people are picky). |

No; you are correct but as I started chatting about this and thinking about it based on S3X posts and did spec and order a Kilo S3X - it just all seemed to fit in this forum Of course, S3X has been delayed and redelayed I have hundreds of frames, whhels, parts etc just sitting there waiting for hubs to show up And if the hub turns out to be really sweet, that is what I would like to use on the Fanton Cross UNO {which would need a new name then} My thought is that the SS/FG cat also implies simple and low maintenance - which dove-tails with internal hubs - but I could be confused or misguided [that's what my kids say] My hope is there will be a whole new catagory of internal hub commuter / sport / touring / beater bikes - I like internal gear hubs |
Better cable routing, the full length housing looks kinda goofy.
Aside from that, the only thing stopping me from buying one is the tease of the S3X in the future. |
Add some fenders to the package and I'd say you have a winner. Sort of like the Redline 925, but with a 5 speed hub.
You might get better input in the commuter subforum. |
That would be pretty awesome, as long as the cable housing looks a bit better.
|
The cable housing doesn't look that bad, considering there is no shifter boss or hole in the bottom bracket shell for a shift cable guide.
|
I WANT IT BADLY! However many gears you go with, it needs to be a freewheel not fixed hub and no coaster. Don't add any other extras like fenders, racks, etc... as that just ups the expense. It makes more sense to let people choose those parts to fit their own individual needs.
|
I'm contemplating, and have pretty much decided on, the fantom cross uno. If this or something else like it with an IGH is coming out in the next couple of months I might have to reconsider.
|
can you offer it with non-dropbars? i just can't stand them.
|
Yes yes yes yes yes!!!!!

And while you're at it personalize this bike exactly for me. I have so much trouble with these pesky allen-keys. I ride SPD's by the way and prefer brown/natural saddles. Make sure there's some sort of thorn gel in the tubes too. Can't stand changing flats.
yeah and sell it with just the frameset and wheelset too  |
Might be better to have shifter on the downtube so you can swap out the bars.
|
Considering I purchased a Motobecane Messenger from you and converted it using a SRAM S-7 hub- I like this idea.
