i finally got done building my fixie. only problem is... my chain is somewhat loose/: my crank has 46T and my fixie cog has 17T, exactly what should i do?

tighten it. does the frame have horizontal dropouts?

tighten the chain? i cant. i already triedd and the chain comes out too short. what are horizontal dropouts tho?

Seriously, if you don't know what a horizontal dropout is how did you think you had enough knowledge to convert a bike?

the smiley faces indicate horizontal dropouts. to tighten chain in horizontal dropouts, pull axle towards rear of dropout until chain tension is better. if you converted a bike with vertical dropouts(indicated by frowny faces) try using a half link in your chain or invest in a chain tensioner.http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/6606/dropslz0.jpg

Don't worry about it, you have to start somewhere (as some have forgotten.)

If you have vertical dropouts it's an easy fix use a chain tensioner as shown in this picture;

you will need a chain tensioner they arent very expensive... also look into getting some foot retention or a front brake. you dont want to figure this one out on your own as the lesson is only learned after something catastrophic happens and your bike doesn't make it.

i have a front and back brake but i was planning to just putt the back brake on later...
how does foot retention help tho? and for the chain tensioner... is that the onlyy way to get
my chain tightened or can buying a new clog with more/less teeth make a difference?

the front brake is responsible for most of your braking power in any setup> a rear brake requires more energy and more force to fully stop a bike than a frond brake does. you could get a bigger cog to tension the chain more but you already have a 17 T cog on there if you go any higher you may end up spinning out quickly on downhills. any higher than 17t you may spin out at a really low speed. also chains tighten and stretch the longer you ride and depending on how often you oil your chain. you may end up switching to an 18T only to find out a month later that your chain has stretched a bit and is now just as slack as you started with. a chain tensioner is really your only solution unless you get a new frame

chain tensioners don't work fixed, only freewheel. the backpressure motion screws them all up.

at least, that's what people say. I would think a non spring loaded tensioner would work, but I've never tried.

well thankss alott for the helpp(: i really apreciate it. i think im going to just leave it as it is since i dnt wanna get a chain tensioner and im planning to start on a new fixie laterr on. i'll make sure i get horizontal dropouts on the next one tho. thanks!

I agree. The set up looks great, but you may have a tough time getting the tension right. You could keep playing around with slightly different gear ratios until you hit the magic one, but it's a bit of a hack.
The bike could be a great looking single speed with a tensioner (could also use a used derailer).
Things that don't fit usually end with getting pissed off. I'd worry about that first and chain tension later.
