now that it's getting a little cold i'm using my Bern snowboard helmet to keep my ears warm. Doesn't breathe that well. I can see it working better when it gets more towards freezing point. Not sure it'll still fit with a balaclava on tho.. :(

Specialized echelon, $55 and breathes okay. Kinda warm in the middle of summer, but great fall through spring. Adjusts well for comfort.

Wait a minute do they actually sell that flight of the conchords helmet? Looks awesome! Brit (I'm spelling it phonetically for those who don't know) is the man.

Warning, stupid question and I do apologize..
But would a skate helmet of some sort suffice for riding a fixed. I'm looking at those prices for the other bike helmets and they aren't too friendly. Sorry, I'm a newbie at all this! Haha! http://www.bellbikehelmets.com/produ....asp?prodID=15 |

Brit, present, Gemaine, present...hilarious |
It's actually Bret, but the Kiwi accent makes it sound like "Brit"

I got the helmet that fit my head the best. It also happened to be the lightest and have the most vents. Great for the road bike.
I suppose if you aren't riding very fast and/or very far, a helmet with fewer vents would work but I should think wearing a bmx bucket would cost you street cred. Chuck Norris would never wear such a thing. |

white Catlike Kompact Pro. before that i had a $17 Pryme skate-style bucket—what a world of difference.

I'm 27 and I've never worn a bike helmet before. I'm considering buying one in the future but I'm not really sure what I should get. I like the looks of skate-style helmets a little better, but I'm concerned that might not be as light or breathable as other helmets are. I think it's absolutely vital that I'd end up with a helmet that I liked in every respect or I'd end up just not wearing it. Any suggestions?

Since we're on the helmet thread, I got a question. A friend of mine gave me his Giro Eclipse for free. Its a bit big. I'm about 6mm smaller than the smallest adjustment. How could I make this fit, or should I just get a new one myself?

When you have a helmet on properly, you should be able to shake your head pretty fast and not have it move at all. I've seen a lot of riders with their helmets too far back, leaving their forehead vulnerable.
Unless you carry a mirror around with you, you can't see what you look like with the helmet on. And who is so vain as to care more about their appearance than their safety. Concussions can look pretty unattractive, too. |
I have a LAS Squalo I wear everywear except on campus when riding on sidewalks. I would reccomend getting a more expensive helmet, it makes wearing it a lot less of a hassle. Better straps, better padding, better adjustment, lighter, and more vents. I dont even notice my helmet most of the time. I do think it looks stupid to wear a helmet but after a couple close calls I never ride without it.

Although I don't see as many people as I think I would with these. So far I've seen about 2 people with that helmet on around where I live. |
