to keep on the band wagon of talking about double straps, has anyone tried the Plemons leather doubles?

who cares if they're made by couriers in san francisco? they could by made by magical elves in a far away kingdom, they'll still stretch.

aesthetically pleasing, yes, but there are more durable and secure options. looks arent everything.

what is the problem with stretching? As long as they don't stretch to the point of breaking. And they are actually quite thick, thicker than toshi's as far as my understanding goes. They shouldn't stretch much.

And the clasps seems like a good idea, absolutely no slipping.

a few of my courier friends a shop owner say there really just a step above soma's. Now Stretching is bad because... For example try riding sf hills and have one snap end of story for you. I'd rather have little or no stretch vs non proven straps. Just save for toshi's or similar straps all I say is looks are cheap, quality can save your life

I ride clipless, and would never ride them with out a brake. Not that this has anything to do with brakeless riding.

Imagine a leather belt. Those stretch over time just being wrapped around your waist. Now take that idea and apply it to fixed riding. Those things will stretch out in no time. And they'll stretch in the holes, which is worse.

what's the problem? well, they'd feel like noodles instead of feeling stiff. you'd need to adjust them regularly. and the holes in the leather will enlarge over time and you'd feel the buckle shift while pulling up. the only plus they'd have is they will not delaminate like some budget straps.

they simply do not hold a candle to toshis, kashimax, or exustars. a step above somas, like someone else pointed out, but not worth $70. they're boutique straps.

for sure, I was just curious. Not that I am in the market for straps right now, but I like to have ideas for what I might want in the future when I upgrade bike parts or can suggest some to friends. Thanks for the info.

And I wouldn't ride clipless on the street. It is too busy and I don't want to have my feet that stuck to my bike. When I start traveling I will switch over for the efficiency and distance comfort, but in town clips and straps all the way.

What about nylon double straps? I know they're not as fancy as leather, but you don't have to worry about stretching or any of that.

I ride with double nylon straps.

I have leather straps, and they break. Some last longer than others, but in the end - they all break eventually.

I just buy two sets of $7 well-go cages and straps, and double them up.

Any sort of belt-buckle design for a toestrap scares me...i can't imagine what those buckle holes would look like after any sort of aggressive riding. Especially non-laminated leather. But okay, I'll agree they're pretty.

I've had nylon straps slip on me while riding which is the worst thing...I dunno if there is such thing as "high-quality" nylon straps vs. "low-quality" ones, but either way I'm sticking with laminated leather doubles.

I already have a set of nylons that I'm running with plastic wellgo cages now. And they don't stay in place very well at all, and I don't really ride agressively at all. I'm thinking of buying a pair of those synthetic laminated comet singles and making doublizers on my own out of like an old shoe or something (just a thought, open to suggestions) and making a like a leather/nylon double with the leather being the strap closest to the ankle. Anyone done this before?

I might try that. I don't feel like dropping big bucks on leather straps when nylon would be more than enough for how I ride. Does anyone make quad-gate nylon clips?

Toshi's will break eventually. Maybe not just from normal riding, but something could always happen.

It's like people who pay 20 bucks for a set of drums sticks. I just don't get it.

Nylon straps have never let me down.

Oh, and anything could happen. Bikeforums might not exist tomorrow. People might suddenly turn into monkeys. We could be invaded by aliens from another planet. The world might explode.

But just saying. These things could happen.

Because only really good straps are foolproof from anything that could possibly happen, other than its intended purpose as foot retention on a bicycle.

so, no pictures? how did they break?

as a drummer, I can tell you that sticks break suddenly and regularly.

quality double straps do not -- they should last at least a decade. that is, of course, if you dont **** them up via user error. and unlike sticks, there is a vast difference between cheap straps and the higher end straps. once you go quality, you'll never back down to the crap. and cheap straps need to be replaced every so often -- eventually the high end straps pay for themselves. buy once, cry once.

not to mention, the high end straps simply feel better.

If money is an issue, just get exustars. $30-50 depending on where you buy them from. money well spent.

I guess my real question was whether you need a doubler or not. I assume if you're using quad gate clips then you don't need a doubler.
