A real fixed gear book?

Maybe this is old news, but I just found out about it. Amazon has it for around 16 bucks.

I have the book and I'm halfway through it. It's nice to have a book that consists of more than just photos, but it probably won't tell you anything you don't know already.

That's what I figured. I ordered it last night and figure it'll be cool to have. It looks like it's well done.

"the cycle messenger’s workhorse"

why does it have to make it seem like all messengers ride fixed?

Not all people that do tricks ride fixed either, but it is a significant part of trick riding, as well as fixed being a significant part of messenger riding.

Google motorpacing and learn. That bike is amazing.

I googled motorpacing. I still don't get it. What's up with the saddle? And the smaller front wheel? AND the fork that looks like a backwards road fork?

I'm not 100% clueless when it comes to bikes (more like 70%) and I've never seen a fork or seat like that.

Yeah, that bike is legit. I don't think I'd be too keen on riding it on the street, but legit nonetheless.

The saddle has a brace because of the increased forces when you race at stayer speeds. It also lets the cyclist sit further forward into the derny's slipstream and up out of the exhaust. The fork and wheel allow the rider to get close to the derny. The backwards curve changes the trail to make things more stable - think of shopping cart wheels and how they are pulled forward, not pushed.

If I am wrong with any of these, feel free to correct.

STAYER - used from around 1894 to describe the bicycle racer who competed in paced
(human and motor) events, and was able to 'stay' at high speed
for long periods.

You know, I was sort of thinking it could of been something like that, but then thought... nah that's too ridiculous. Learn something new everyday. I'm gonna set up my traveler conversion like that and get a 65t chainring for a 65/17 ratio that way I can race people in cars.

Or bust my ass.

Sorry that the seatpost and fork don't look right to you.

That bike is the sole reason I'm considering buying this book.
