The internal ratio of the SX3 is .625, .75 and 1.0 (Direct).
This is different than the freewheeling 3-sp AW hub which is .66, 1.0 (Direct) and 1.33.

Wrong, wrong wrong. That routing is completely standard for bar end shifters (pic). If you want your contributions here to be taken seriously, you should make sure that you know wtf you're talking about before hitting "save", especially on highly critical posts like this. FFS.

your web page for the s3x bike says that it had a flip-flop hub. you should edit that out so people don't get confused.
looking forward to pictures of the different colors.

Is it possible to skid without damaging the hub internals? I mean going down a big hill...dropping gear ratios and skidding is what we've been salivating about for years...If this thing doesn't work or has a high failure rate we are never going to forgive SunRace again!

I broke my s3x hub on my third ride. I was out on a hilly ride and stood up to climb on a 15% grade. the gear slipped and i was lucky to not damage the family jewels on the top tube. it was shifting perfectly for the preceding 40 miles prior to the climb so the issue here is not adjustment, which often rendered an early demise for sturmey archer AW hubs of yore.
i suspect the reason why 3-sp IGHs (e.g the sturmey archer AW hubs) lasted so long is that they used tall gearing and were used with 3-speed cruiser bars, neither of which allows big torque into the hub. i was using road drops and climbing a huge hill.
maybe i got unluckly with my s3x specimin or perhaps i should have used the bike as a city bike instead - as per the original intent of the hub. however it is clear that this hub is not for the sporting rider or tourer.
i took a look at detailed ACS hub exploded-view diagrams on sheldon brown's site. i used that as the basis for the s3x breakdown. it's mechanically very similar to the ACS (out of production since the 70s, or thereabouts.) the indicator spindle which shifts the driver pinion is 2mm thick. that should be an indication that skid stops and and to a lesser degree, backpedalling is not acceptable use for the s3x.
i am going back to non-internally geared hubs. if you consider yourself a strong rider or if the mechanical drag is an issue, you are better off sticking to a fixed or derailleur gearing.

Mine's been really, really cool. I haven't been able to ride to work as much as I would have liked since I got it, but it's been out 4-5 times now. Shifting took a little getting used to. I try to make sure that I'm not applying any resistance to the pedals in either direction and the shifting is fine. Sometimes the shifter will bind if you are still givin' her power while you try to shift. I've also been double checking the tension on the indicator spindle. A little locktite on it seems to be a good idea. Mine loosened up a touch riding. Thumbs up.

Bump!
Hoping Bikes_Direct or others will respond to some of this info here. I'm really wanting to try one of these hubs out, either as a package deal with the Mercier or otherwise... but my main intent, besides commuting and riding around NYC would be touring (with saddle bag, semi-loaded, etc.).
I'm over 200lbs... is this thing gonna explode on me?
Also, these hubs seem to be out of stock everywhere... is it possible SA are retooling due to the play and breakage?
