Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

i've got my crosscheck set up as a "dinglespeed" as well, geared at 42x17 and 38x21
gives me a decent road and offroad gear. both gears have about the same chain length so it is no problem switching between gears.

so far this has been a pretty good setup

pics later...

Bikes: ...take me places.

Had my KM 'dingled' several years ago, 36/16 + 32/20.
<1 minute to change gears & did the job very well.

There's usually some on eBay:

Sturmey Archer is claiming (last I read, at least) a "late second quarter 2010" release date for their S2C hub, a modern two-speed kickback coaster brake hub. That gives you the option of two change on the fly speeds without having to run any cables or derailleurs, and you can even ditch your rear rim brake and the associated cable. Sounds like a fun gadget to me, although I can't say how they'll compare to the vintage stuff on quality or price.

Bikes: A little of everything

Neat- how do you switch gears on that 2-speed hub, though?

This could be a solution for you when they bring it out.

You just backpedal briefly and it toggles to the other gear. Sustained backpedal activates the coaster brake.

Click of the heel, and you're geared down to 40% of your main gear.

(And Schlumpf certifies it for fixed use now.)
