too many stem spacers?

does this look "off" to you?

Yes. The steerer tube comes uncut. Find the height that's right for you by experimenting (move some spacers above your stem and some below), chop it down and lose 'em!

grymg 12-28-09 08:00 PM

I ended up with 20mm of spacers on my Kilo, love it.

tgscordv6 12-28-09 08:21 PM

Different for everyone. I have 13mm of spacers. Feels good man.

roadfix 12-28-09 08:29 PM

Perhaps replace them with black spacers so they'll blend with the head tube.

If that's the right height, you can just cut the steerer a bit then get a stem with rise.

It does kind of look weird, but if it works (it's the right size frame) and it's comfortable, who really gives a **** if it looks weird.

Scrodzilla 12-28-09 10:47 PM

Yeah...you know what? I didn't mean to come across like I was telling you what to do in my earlier post. If your bike feels good, that's important and there isn't much need to experiment. It can't hurt, though. You may end up finding a more comfortable setup. I know that when my Kilo came stock, I absolutely hated how much reach the stem had and coupled with all the spacers, my bike was pretty uncomfortable for me.

Dustintendo 12-28-09 11:12 PM

nope you didnt come off that way. infact im down with any input at all..my last bike had a quill stem

adriano 12-29-09 02:37 AM

dont go over 5cm. i have 1cm on one and 5cm on the other.

take out some spacers.

filtersweep 12-29-09 04:30 AM

while i doubt it matters on a mercier fork, there are limits to this sort of practice from a safety perspective. of course that can be a hollow argument at ssfg.

Since the question was about whether or not it looks off, I'm going to say yes. Maybe a stem with a bit of rise, and less spacers. It looks odd to me.

mander 12-29-09 11:54 AM

You could lose a cm or two of spacers (most or all of the 5mm ones on top there) and get the same rise by flipping the stem.

Brian 12-29-09 12:10 PM

That stem looks like zero rise.

..or flip the existing stem (as mentioned above). It has a slight rise.

Brian 12-29-09 12:24 PM

Stem: Forged Aluminum, O degree, Removable Clamp, Silver Finish, Threadless 1"

Scrodzilla 12-29-09 12:28 PM

I think that info is wrong. My stock stem definitely didn't correspond with those specs and had quite a bit of rise when flipped.

We don't want to know how excited you were. But look at the photo he attached.

mander 12-29-09 12:39 PM

To my eyes it looks clearly tighter than 90 degrees. Compare the obtuse-looking angle on top to the acute looking angle on the bottom. It looks to me like a knockoff of the Nitto UI 5GX stem which has a slight drop or rise depending on the flip.

[Edit] I see that the wheel is turned away from the camera and the stem might well be 0 rise. Meh.

Scrodzilla 12-29-09 12:41 PM

Ha

Flipping that stem definitely yields a little excitement...:D

Dustintendo 12-29-09 04:51 PM

i think the stock kilo stem has 8 degree rise when flipped the other way

rogwilco 12-29-09 04:56 PM

Imo it looks ok. If that's the right height for you, leave it like that. Comfort >>> aesthetics.
