Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

What do you guys think of putting a strong lock like a small Mater hardened lock, around the cainring and chain to prevent you from pedaling? Do you think that this would deter a thief at all? This way, they wouldn't be able to ride the bike away.

Just curious,
Thanks,
Rlh

They would carry the bike away. Or cut the bike's chain.

I guess I gorgot to mention that this would be in addition to your regular lock.

It might slow them down a little. If they can cut/break your regular lock, then they will wheel the bike away, or cut your chain

Bikes: A couple customs and some beaters.

So, all of this talk of multiple locks got me wondering...aren't these locks heavy as **** to tote around? And also, don't most of these precautions eliminate any resale value on the parts/make it really hard to even work on the bike (especially with glue in the hex holes, etc)

Nothing better than carrying a 15lb length of chain plus huge ass bodega lock around the waist to add to your exercise quotient Makes me feel like superman when I ride my geared ride without my lock on weekends around CP...

you know, i think the more deterrents on your bike the better. i like the master lock idea. it stops the drunk idiot who is just out and about to steal bikes/parts. unfortunately (like mentioned above), it does not stop said idiot from kicking in your wheels or slashing your seat. that part sucks!

My last custom bike stolen they took the pole out the ground. I went to see some pals at their job and stayed about an hour. They took a car and pulled the pole out of the ground. As I stated on these forums if they want it ...they will take it.

Do like the old days when Kyptonite came out they found a guy who stole a bike, chased him took a lock and locked him to a gate and commence the A&* whipping.

Just know how well you lock it.

Bikes: GT Sprint(roadie) Nishiki Stony Point(stolen), Mid 80's Huffy Cruiser, '69 Schwinn Collegiate(needs work), Raleigh Technium(In progress fixed gear) Schwinn Mesa new project bike!

I read popular science and I read about a gps chip for a bike that had a battery that recharged when the bike was pedaled with some sort of generator. This sort of thing is near production. I will try to find the article.

don't forget that they may want the street sign, too. my bike was u-locked to a ground-stable stop sign in a nice chicago neighborhood. a few hours later, i was staring at a pole. they unbolted the sign and just lifted the bike off the pole. i imagined someone standing on the back of a pickup truck.
