i need a new wheelset for my single speed commuter bike. being a campy guy i have had great luck with fulcrum wheels.

the racing 7's can be had for cheap, and i'm pretty sure they will be fantastic. all i would need is a spacer kit to run them single speed, correct?

If it is a cassette style wheel then yeah you should only need a spacer kit like the performance bike one.

You can certainly run those wheels SS, but you would be loosing all the design benefits of that wheel. Fulcrum 7s have a funky 2:1 lacing pattern to compensate for the dish (asymmetry) of the wheel. The asymmetry is there to allow a big fat multi-geared cassette to fit in there. A true SS wheel is undished (or barely dished), thus allowing for a symmetrical spoking pattern and equal tension on the left and right sides, which makes the wheel stronger, stiffer, structurally more stable, and more durable. True SS wheels are not very expensive, but even a relatively cheap one is going to function better as a SS wheel than a Fulcrum 7.

Get that set for $89.99, throw on a BMX freewheel, call it a day.

Any track wheelset can take a freewheel, and you don't have to worry about a cassette and spacers.

is your frame 120 or 130 rear spacing?

This is a critical point. I (perhaps incorrectly) assumed the OP was riding a conversion. But if its a fgss specific frame, the fulcrum wheel won't fit in the frame without modification (to the frame).

Nice looking wheels. I wish the spokes were butted. Seems like there are a million budget ($100-$250) wheelsets available with straight gauge spokes. At the opposite end of the spectrum there is a lot of fancier high end stuff (>$400), but I don't seem much in the middle. I'd like to see a ~$250-320 wheelset similar to these but with butted spokes. I suppose the reason why stock FG/SS wheelsets with butted spokes aren't commonly available is that the average consumer doesn't understand the benefits of butted spokes and doesn't really factor that into their buying decisions. They add a little bit to the cost but not much. The wheels look the same with or without butted spokes, so its easier for the manufacturer to just cheap-out and use straight gauge.

I guess thats why I just buiild my own.

For SS, just find some nice old thread-on Record hub laced to anything, and toss on a freewheel. Dirt cheap, and top-shelf quality. I've had friends literally give those wheels away to me....

I am still considering these, and just re-spoking the front later.
