Roll Top Vs. Flap Messenger Back Pack?

I'm really interested in Freight Baggage's Backpack...but I can't decide if I like the roll top or flap better. The roll top looks awesome, is completely waterproof, but I bet rolling/unrolling the thing all the time will become a huge pita. The flap kinda looks weird but it would be very easy to open and close, and while it's not as waterproof in torrential conditions as the rolltop, I'm assuming it still is for most rainy conditions.

Which backpack would you get? If you lived in San Francisco with no car and commuted with a lot of crap.

Flap

rolltop

I like rolltops. Thinking about buying the Timbuk2 Hemlock soon.

How often to you ride in the rain? Honestly. If you spend a substantial amount of time in downpours, then the roll top is best, but until you move to portland, the flap will work well enough. Fog won't get past the flap.

I have a chrome bag with a flap and It is sufficient in rain. I've ridden in a couple down pours and never had any problems.

what i meant by options is, when u get stuck in the rain, u wouldn't have to worry about needing another bag.
And I like how when you need to carry large (long) boxes that is taller than the bag, u can unroll the top and put everything in instead of opening the flap and have the flap hit back against ur neck. But that's just me.

The flap will suffice, but a roll top is a better guarantee. If I got a new bag, I'd get a roll-top.

I don't own a car so I ride rain or shine. While a roll top would be best -- especially if you're carrying stuff that will stick out of your compartment -- I've never had a problem with my Warsaw leaking, even in the windiest, wettest storms.

With the way the Freight folds in, you shouldn't have any problems. Just cinch down your compression straps and you should be good to go.

i think i'm going to go with the regular flap backpack. the roll top is nice, but it seems like a huge annoyance opening and closing the thing

it's a roll-top, not astro-physics. what about that seems annoying? if you're in SF, why don't you just try to get a firsthand look at these? If you can't hit Freight, I'm sure some shops around there will be carrying them.

I have a Timbuk2 Messenger M (the most basic one) and I have ridden through several downpours (my city gets approximately 1500mm of yearly precipitation). Never had a single drop of rain penetrate the inside of the bag.

i have the 25 liter one. i dont have a car so when i go to the store i can fit all of my groceries in it. when it is not full of stuff it compresses so its not that bulky. it also has really nice shoulder straps that are wide and soft. the only problem that i have with it is that there is only one small pocket on the inside. after two and a half years of daily use it has gotten a couple of small holes which i covered in gorilla tape. still waterproof.
