I had a car when I first came to Chicago. As soon as my parents brought up my bike, though, I had them take my car back to Missouri because I didn't want or need it any more. Between walking, riding, and public transportation, I get around town fine. Don't need a car, don't want a car. I'm happier, healthier, and slightly more sane without one.

Two wheels beat the hell out of four.

I use it when I feel like it, for what purpose I see fit, and wherever I see f**king fit.

Please don't tell me you can't change a tube. If so, I think you might be due for some basic mechanic lessons :)

I ALWAYS buy my tubes in bulk from performance. Seems like they always have the ten packs on sale for $20. $2 a tube is perfect and I refuse to pay any more.

I just bought a ten pack from Perfomance(the best deal around),as for the rest of this thread I say boo.

what would a cab cost for those few shopping runs? I suspect less than your car payment/insurance/gas/maintenance per year.

I thought of taxis but there are a number of disadvantages - when I said a ton of groceries I wasn´t exaggerating. I dont think a (Munich) taxi driver would be too pleased about loading the car up with so much shopping. I also would be nervous relying on taxi´s so completely. Sometimes you ring them and they come and sometimes they don´t. Sometimes there just aren´t any to be had. The do not want to take pre-bookings and there only seems to be one taxi telephone number. Munich is not a shining example of service industries at their best and being left waiting at the supermarket with a ton of groceries is not my idea of fun. You are right it would be cheaper and possible in theory, if I went shopping more often or hired a car occasionally for example but it would all be extra hassle that I could do without.

I did also think of a trailer. I once had a cheap one that was not very good and that may have put me off the idea but maybe if I had a good one then I could do it. That would be the most attractive option I think.

dang i wish so much i could be car-less, but anywhere you live in california (except possibly for san francisco) you HAVE to have a car. reading this thread, though, has made me think that maybe my wife and i can do with one car instead of two...

I buy tubes in bulk, too... just happened to shred one beyond patching, while only carrying a patch kit not a spare tube. Hope that puts everyone's mind at ease...

I don't have a car, or a license, never got it.

I ride everyday, 6-7 miles each way. Keeps me in good shape and happy, a great way to work out stress from work.

I don't think it is that wierd, there are a lot of us.

Phil
