Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Just bought a pista online, help a newbie out

My LBS had jacked up prices so I found a pista on eBay. When it arrives what should I looks for to make sure it's in riding condition, tightening crank? truing wheels? and just tightening all the nuts and bolts? Fixed gear seem so simple to me, that it looks like very few things could go wrong with one. (are there any other things to check before riding)

other Pista owners, what size hex wrench should I have? and as for brake levers, I want to put one right next to the stem on my drop bar, basically the fat and flat part of the drop bar, how many millimeters is that?

thanks so much.

You should bring it to your LBS. Just tightening bolts on your frame without a torque wrench is not a wise thing to do.

take it to my LBS and what? ask for a tune up or a check up??

my LBS has a reputation for ripping people off, and has awful reviews on yelp/google

Do you not have another bike shop in your area? I live in a relatively small town, yet I have 3 bike shops within 10 miles of me.

If you just ask them to look it over it shouldn't be much at all, sub 30 bucks to make sure everythings tight YMMV based on location

Edit: Also if you don't know what your doing don't succumb to the urge to go around tightening everything up all willie nillie... you could do some damage

And when you're at the shop, ask to watch the mechanic work on it. Then ask questions.
What issues is he looking for?
How does one test for them?
Can he repeat that?
What should be regularly monitored?
What tools should you have in a basic repair kit for that bike?
Take notes.
