Risers handlebars + brake levers

So I'm not sure if you guys have this problem too, but I didn't anticipate such a problem when I ordered my first pair of risers. So the problem is basically this, after cutting my riser bars down to preferred length and putting on the grips, I noticed that the grips ended right where the bars starts to angle downwards towards the clamps, leaving me no room for my brake levers. Do you guys have any suggestion on how to put on my brake levers?

Riding brakeless isn't much of a choice for me because on my commute, there are a lot of steep hills, and that should explain everything.

Please give your thoughts/advices/suggestions on my predicament. I'm really excited about these new risers but can't ride'em far til I find a way to get my brake levers on :(

That would be too easy... :)

I've thought of that already, but my hands are kinda big, so if I were to do that, my hands would be hanging off the bars.

weld on the ends you cut off...

do you brakes not go beyond the bend at all?
It's not too important that the brakes are mounted on a perfectly flat spot. They're fine as long as they're not rocking and sliding when the clamp is tightened.

Put lever on the bend of the bar, get 2 closed end wrenches, slide wrenches onto lever and use as leverage to bend lever away from the bar. Be careful. the levers can break easily.

Iv done this on my bmx bikes for years with out any issues.

I never had problems just putting the levers on the bends of the bars. It doesn't have to be a flat spot.

Don't cut the bars so short.....

erichsia 02-22-10 03:14 PM

haha, did you cut the risers enough so the grips are touching the stem? because i hope you did. pics.

On the bend? Like right where it curves right? I just need some clarification here, I'm not sure if you're talking of the point where it starts to angle downwards or the point where it's already angled down towards the stem.

Get some pursuit bars with a drop to them, then flip them. Rise-Horns!!

look here sir. I got the bacon, so you better back up, Mr. Creamsicle.

Scrodzilla 02-22-10 07:24 PM

I know, I know...for whatever reason I'm feeling particularly snarky this evening. I went on a nice long ride this afternoon for the first time in a while and it got me all riled up.

I'd like to apologize if I may have offended any queers with bullhorns.

And I've got scrambled eggs.

Don't cut your bars so short. that's lame. If you clamp your levers on that curve, you'll probably create stress risers.
