But this stuff is all over the internetz anyway, so read up and check back in later.

Being a Pantywaist running gears on my road bike, I decided to try and improve my leg strength for both Mountain Biking (Where I wear baggy shorts) and road biking. I ended up purchasing a Windsor Clockwork and swapped out the broken out of the box freewheel for a fixed cog. It is very much improving my cycling but damm near scared the crap out of me the first few times I thought I could freewheel. I kept the brakes, and find them very useful even with the fixed gear in traffic situations. As far as the Zen connection quote, I think your skinny jeans are cutting off your circulation. I ride geared road and mountain as well as single speed mountain and now fixed, and don't remember the last time I meditated on my bike.

Main Entry: Zen

it is most certainly not our place to judge another's choices based on whether we feel they are, as cyclists, more or less "authentic" as we.
it is most hypocritical to judge another for making a choice based on aesthetics, since we all do it to some extent.

that's what's up.

I ride fixed because it's fun. Don't try to make the motivation more complicated than it is. I couldn't care less if it's trendy.

MaxSta 02-24-10 02:06 AM

LOL, if anything annoys me it's people who go "hey take the brake off!"
I ride a bike b/c i love biking and hate public transport and traffic

a bike isn't a fashion statement. these hipsters they are part of some scene and "culture" (meanwhile it's not bike culture, since i'd love for more people to ride bikes instead of cars, and most other bikers would agree.) It's a judgmental, trendy, pompous bull**** popularity contest that somehow makes you HARDCORE for not having brakes on your bike.

did you know most bicycle riders die when they get hit by a car? So spider like reflexes and a ZEN CONNECTION to the bike won't stop you when a guy driving a truck doesn't see you, but of course wearing reflectors and riding with brakes is LAME.

(yes, gave her a caliper, a couple colors of cable housing, and a lever)

I am so trendy all the other kids want to be like me and when they aren't riding because they are scared of a little snow, ice, and -40C temps... I am.

:)

If I am trendy in any way at all it isn't because I ride a fixie.

I love that video. I'm actually serious though, I've been looking for it for a while.

fixedmonkey 02-26-10 08:21 PM

Yup basically fixed gear bikes are for frat 'bros' and nostalgic pabst blue ribbon drinking people longing for the early noughts.
