So I'm just about done with a ss build for the gf (hopefully she rides the damn thing more than a couple times). Anyways, I'm having trouble finding a set of silver or black front/rear brake calipers that will work on this thing.

It's an old Shogun road frame, which I think originally had 27's or something, but I'm running 700c wheels on it. I mocked it up and measured, so looks like I need a caliper that reaches at least 72-73mm. I'm not even sure what the technical terms are for the different styles, but it doesn't have recessed mounting holes and needs the regular old school style nut/bolt, not the new kinds with a shorter allen/hex head.

This is the last piece so I can get the bike ridable in time for her bday next week. Can you guys help with links or suggestions on where to find what I need? Or, as an alternative can I just use a newer caliper and just source longer nuts/bolts? Thanks so much!

Google 73 mm reach, nutted calipers. Velo Orange had Tektro make some. You might be able to put some nutted calipers together yourself. The alternative is to get 73mm reach recesed nut calipers and carefully drill out the back of the holes on the frame to fit recessed nuts. I've done this and it works fine; just use a lubricant on the fork crown as the steel can be very hard.

Uh. Just go on ebay. Dia compe, weinmann, altenburger, etc. tons of old long reach calipers for next to nothing.

But the old models are cheap and plentiful used, just check ebay.

I'd look for a pair of Mafac Racers, used on ebay, or at your local bicycle co-op. They look great, have the reach you need, and actually stop, unlike a lot of the other long reach brakes.

The 800a is cheap but will it work as well as, say...this Tektro Big Mouth 73 at Rivendell?

Unlike the Riv brakes, the 800as have no quick release which may make wheel removal more inconvenient (depending on tire size you might have to flatten the tire first, unless there are qr's on the brake levers). For a girlfriend/ town bike though they'll likely be fine. In the context of a flat fix, they basically mean you have to mount the wheel before pumping the tire up all the way... it's not the end of the world.

I'm running a Tektro R556 Long Reach up front on my 1980 Centurion conversion. It does have a quick release so you might want to check it out.

I've got the Rivendell Silvers(same as Tektro R556) and they work great. I've also used the Dia Compe centerpulls and they also work great.

I ended up ordering the Tektro Big Mouth 23 from Rivendell. Seems like a cheaper and mostly comparable caliper to the R556, and still has the qr. Going to run 35's, so don't want to risk it being an issue. Hate paying crazy shipping, but needed it quick, so I had to go with 2-day shipping.

Forgot to update pics. Turns out I measured wrong lol...didn't need calipers quite as long as I thought. Anyways, these were taken back in March and yes, the chain tension wasn't adjusted at the time.
