How do I choose a bottom bracket to get a straight chain line? Will a different hub require a different BB to get a straight chain line? Also, how do the cranks and chain rings factor in?

I was pretty sure that to recieve njs certification the cranks had to be iso (sugino 75 bb and cranks are iso while sugino makes the rest of their stuff jis basically)

but it seems that 11.4 has a great answer for this question, last post on this page

Octolink is also NJS

Is it true that the stock crankset on a Kilo can only be removed with a blow torch?

Also the fella's at the LBS said that its illegal to ride a fixed gear without a paisley top tube proector? any help would be greatly appreciated.

You must be joking.

1) may be removed in any other way square taper cranks are removed (crank puller)
2) top tube protector.... NO (unless you have track drops that hit your top tube when fully turned, just wrap some bar tape/electrical tape to protect)

Hmmm! I guess you learn something new everyday! what a relief I was having a helluva time finding a paisley top tube protector.

Also, these crank pullers of which you speak, are these found in some of the more seedier sections of town?

damn, totally forgot about that. only one generation though i believe right? (i think shimano moved on to that hollowtech business with 2 piece cranks and external bearings shortly after that certefied octalink). afaik iso is the certefied square taper, but tapers are somewhat interchangeable and it seems that the quality control across the board on tapers is pretty poor.

and rofl hard at that tt required business. always fun to go to the lbs and give new guys a hard time about sweet fixies (was helping a friend out at a shop get his new parts on. he said he wanted to transfer the reflectors from his old wheelset over to his new one for some reason. everyone had a good laugh telling him how many pie plates and such he would also require)

What tool did they use to remove this guy's sense of humor?

gusmore 03-02-10 07:29 PM

I dunno, but I hope the tool never gets me.

they are indeed, but it must be operated by a crusty and incorrigible old man. that's why it's called a crank puller. Brian or Tejano Tracker should be able to help you out with that.

spaceboy 03-03-10 12:54 AM

Can anyone help me with my dumb question please? :)

syahirax 03-03-10 12:58 AM

is there any difference if you use track crank set or roadbike crank with single chainring? :D

ok new dumb question. i've made quite a few improvements to my winter bike over the course of this crazy iowa winter, now that the ice and snow are all starting to melt i find that i still want to ride this bike.

the problem is those tires weigh about 2lbs. each and are not the greatest on dry pavement. the question is, does anybody make a 26" slick tire in white or blue? I've found a couple via ebay and google search but there all beach cruiser tires that seem a bit sketchy. any help would be appreciated.

ndmhxc 03-03-10 06:07 PM

So my there is all of a sudden some creaking down near my crankset/bb area... it sounds as if its coming from both sides leading me to assume that it could be the bottom bracket rather than just one of the crank arms being loose or something. Any insight? If it is my BB, will oil fix this or is my old stock BB just coming to the end of its life? Thanks in advance.

neanderthal 03-04-10 12:33 AM

the lockring against my cog screws on clockwise and loosens counterclockwise, so isnt that wrong? And does that mean i should get a different lockring?

My dumb question:

Why are Phil Wood hubs so expensive?
